Abstract
;This paper sets its thesis as Baek, Sung-gi's piri solo piece which was primarily performed in Jeonju traditional culture centure hanbyeok art hall on 28 May 2003. , whose motif derived from poem written by Jeong,Sun-lyang, is still widely studied by piri performers. This paper studied the piece, sorted out how the composer's thoughts appeared in the piece, and scrutinized progress of melody, scale, form of rhythm, and piri technique, after dividing the seven-chapter piece into paragraphs and clauses. As a result, the features below could be found. First, the poem by Jeong, Sun-lyang became a motif of this song. In the poem, there is a part in which a narrator watches the remaining snow of a silent mountain in winter, and longs for hopeful and bright spring to come. The composer expresses this particular sentiment by reversing the atmosphere of the piece from dark Menari scale to a bright and lilting Kyung scale. Second, to analyze the melody, I divided the piece which constitutes 285 bars for seven chapters into paragraphs and clauses, and scrutinized the progress of melody and scale. In the first and second chapter, the progress of melody of f-e♭-c and b♭-a♭-f, and the descending melody of major 2nd+Minor 3rd frequently appear. Chapter one and two utilize the archetypal Menari scale of mi ․ (sol) ․ la ․ do ․ (le) ․ mi′ and the ending note's major second & minor third descent melody frequently appears, which is the scale's particular feature. In the second chapter, a giving and receiving form as well as A-B-A' ternary form is employed. In the third chapter's A', C, D paragraph, the g note and b flat note appears, which is deemed as an extended Menari scale, and the ending note's descending melody changes from major 2nd+minor 3rd to minor 2nd+major 2nd. This particular shift plays a role of presenting a new scale in next chapter more naturally. The fourth chapter consists five notes: sol ․ la ․ do ․ le ․ mi, and the scale changes into Kyung scale. In terms of melody, a giving and receiving form of melody alternately appears in every four bars. The fifth chapter is a solo part of piri, and artist can arbitrarily perform in this section. The sixth chapter contains giving and receiving form, and maintains Kyung scale. In the seventh chapter's melodic progress, an apparently emulated forms appeared in each phrase, and both Menari and Kyung scale appeared. Paragraph A, B is Kyung scale of three flats, in which e♭is the main note. However, in paragraph C, D appears Menari scale of four flats in which f is the main note. Eventually, the Menari scale in chapter 1~3, and the Kyung scale in chapter 4~6 are combined in chapter 7, expanding the ending while wrapping up the song. Third, based on each chapter's time signature, beats based on quadruple time such as 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4, set crochet as their criteria, 6/8 beat uses dotted quarter note as a criteria, and 10/8 beat of Utmori rhythm uses crochet+quaver+crochet as a criteria. appears in every chapter's rhythm, and in free tempo, triplet rhythm of for expressing strain and relaxation, and minim rhythm of frequently appear. Also, as the rhythm becomes faster, the frequency of quaver increases. Furthermore, the rhythm form of piri performance played a role of expressing the rhythm's basic form, and expanding the expression of rhythm. Fourth, after analyzing the piri technique, traditional techniques contain Tuiseong, Nongeum, Seochimpyo, Moktwigim(Ssangtwigim), and modern techniques contain staccato and accent. In general, in Menari scale's slow rhythm, the traditional technique was more frequent, and in Kyeong scale's rapid rhythm, the frequency of modern technique's staccato was high. Decorating note is frequent in chapter one and five, which decreased as the song become faster. HotJangsickeum was used to produce one sound before the main sound in order to prevent unstable notes while expressing the leaping note, which is an inherent feature of piri, and also to avoid monotony when a same note repeats. KyeopJangsickeum was frequently employed to embellish the main note by finger rolling. Similarly, composed in early 2000's and frequently performed until now, has its meaning in uniqueness of using both Menari and Kyeong scale. It employed traditional , , and decorative expressions based on piri's traditional techniques. Currently, while numerous songs are being created, is still widely being played due to its shift in scale, use of various traditional forms, and composer's deep understanding and underlying foundation of piri. In the future, I expect this paper to be used as a basis research material for analyzing songs based on traditional factors. I also hope this thesis help performers who perform this song.
