Abstract
Safety is basically a basic housing function must be met. Spatial safety is generally planned with focus on crime prevention, and a safe residential environment is created by physically blocking outsiders or by expanding the eyes of surveillance. However, such housing environment is not always felt safe for everyone. For the background of the construction of ‘Anshim Housing for single woman household(Anshim housing)’ in Seoul, the recognition between a sense of security and safety exists. 'A sense of safety' includes the psychological state of a person and a variety of factors. The Anshim Housing in Seoul were planned in consideration of social, economic and physical characteristics for the residents’ sense of safety. Given that community housing is ‘a form of housing in which individuals share a space for the reduction of financial burden and social interactions with others’, they can provide a socio-economic sense of safety for their residents. The existence of ‘trustworthy members’ can affect the residents’ sense of safety, and the trust of the members are formed by the accumulations of ‘contact’ experiences. In order to generate contacts among the members, it is necessary to plan the space of community housing considering the behaviors and time use of the members. Yet, since the 'time' in which the members occupy the space has not been sufficiently considered as an influential factor for the planning stage, the utilization of the shared space is turns out poorly. In this regard, the purpose of this study was to determine whether community housing positively affected residents’ sense of safety and to derive the relationship of shared time occurrence according to type of shared space to examine the characteristics of shared space with shared time. In doing so, this study sought the possibility of shared spaces for residents’ sense of safety. In this study, ‘residents’ sense of safety’ referred to ‘a psychologically safe state with few physical, social and economic factors that cause housing insecurity’. ‘Shared time’ was defined as ‘time to encounter other members in a shared space of community housing’. This study classified the type of shared space into ‘shared space within units, shared space between units, shared space within a neighborhood, shared space within a complex’ according to the public and private hierarchy of sharing and users. The type of shared time was classified as ‘time of stay, time of greetings, time of conversations, time of activities, period of community housing, period of neighborhood residence’ according to the length of time and period. In order to derive the relation between shared space and shared time, the shared spaces of 26 community housings in Seoul were analyzed according to the sharing type of spaces. According to the length of the shared time, the places of contact and the residents’ behaviors were also analyzed. Due to limitations in the case analysis of the relation between shared space and shared time, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 young persons living in a single-person household in Seoul (14 community housings). As a result of analyzing the interview participants’ perceptions of safety in relation to residence, despite differences in sensitivity, the majority of the participants living in a community housing experienced that living in a community housing affected their psychological safety. The analysis of sharing type of shared spaces and length of sharing time showed that sharing time in a multi-unit community housing was higher than a single-unit community housing. As the length of shared time was affected by the existence of the shared space between the units, the shared time of a multi-unit community housing tended to increase. Mover, the residents’ behaviors varied by the length of their shared time. Based on the in-depth interviews with the residents and literature reviews, the factors of the residents’ sense of safety were classified into physical, social, and economic aspects. The psychological aspect of the interviewers’ choice of housing was influenced by the social and physical factors. In particular, the ‘member factors’ of the social aspects improved the residents’ sense of safety through ‘coincidental encounters and intentional encounters’. The time accumulation of social interactions in a shared space of a community housing allowed the residents to establish trust and social network of the members. That is, the residents who used ‘a shared space with sufficient shared time’ could achieve ‘the sense of safety’ through ‘trustworthy members’. For the occurrence and accumulation of shared time among residents, six characteristics of shared space combined with shared time were derived. The three characteristics in the spatial domain are as follows. The first characteristic was the configuration and layout of the shared space. The structure of the shared space was important to organize the residents’ behaviors in a shared space. Securing diversity of spaces chosen by the residents increased the opportunities for shared time. Also, placing a shared space over the residents’ moving flows could enhance the shared time of accidental encounters. Second, proper furniture layout and furnishing were closely related to the use of a shared space. The third characteristic was the housing volume corresponded to the number of residents in a unit. The appropriate number of residents per a unit was 4-5 or 7. The three characteristics in the program domain are as follows: first, the provision of engagement programs for members, the planning of regular activities, and the planning of the voluntary small group organizations. These six characteristics could impact the residents’ sense of safety by increasing shared time. The significance of this study, which analyzed the relation between shared time and community housing, is to apply the concept of time as a new planning factor to improve residents’ sense of safety in a community housing. In this study, the in-depth interviews with the residents in a community housing comprehensively identified the influence factors of the sense of safety of the young persons living in a single-household in a community housing. As a result of analyzing the factors affecting the sense of safety in a community housing, it was revealed that the encounter time between the members positively impacted the improvement of the residents’ sense of safety. In addition, this study analyzed the relationship between shared spaces and shared time as well as the type of shared places by classifying the encounters with members according to the length of time. In terms of shared spaces combined with shared time, both the spatial domain and program domain were addressed. This study, which contributes to the formation of the types of community housings considering shared time and programs for shared spaces, can be used in community housing plans shedding light on residents’ sense of safety in the future.
