영화 <피라미드의 공포, 1985>에 나타난 브루스 브로튼(Bruce Broughton)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of Bruce Broughton (1945-) in the film "Young Sherlock Holmes, 1985”, which shows a versatile musical abilities ranging from TV series to large commercial films It analyzes the musical features shown. As a research method for this purpose, after analyzing the history of detective film music and the life and works of Bruce Broughton, which is classified as a genre of the movie Young Sherlock Holmes, the film is structured and introduced into the beginning, development, climax, And analyzed the music. Young Sherlock Holmes is based on Sherlock Holmes, written by Arthur Conan Doyle, a British mystery novel about a mysterious serial murder case in which Holmes first steps down the path of detective. According to music analysis, Bruce Broughton described a 19th-century film well mixed into 20th-century musical languages. Broughton was important in expressing the timeliness of the film, and he approached it from the side of the sound design to realize a lot of effective sound. In addition, because I thought that the color of electronic instruments was not suitable for movies in the 19th century, I showed the color of electronic instruments through the orchestra through changes of musical instruments, the use of special techniques, and set light motifs in characters and situations to suggest the contents, helping viewers to participate in reasoning. Also, the scene was effectively represented by the overlap of the arrangement rate according to cross-editing, and the sound and dynamism were changed according to the change of place. We hope this study will serve as a useful reference for studying the works of many film and music composers, including Bruce Broughton's.;본 연구의 목적은 TV 시리즈부터 대형 상업영화에 이르기까지 다재다능한 음악적 능력을 다각적으로 보여주고 있는 브루스 브로튼(Bruce Broughton, 1945~)의 작품 중 영화 <피라미드의 공포(Young Sherlock Holmes, 1985)>에서 나타난 음악적 특징을 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위한 연구 방법으로 영화 <피라미드 공포>의 장르로 분류되는 탐정 영화 음악의 변천사와 브루스 브로튼의 생애, 작품 세계를 파악한 후 영화를 이야기의 흐름에 따라 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 구조화하고 삽입된 음악을 분석하여 연구하였다. 영화 <피라미드의 공포>는 영국의 추리 소설 작가 아서 코난 도일에 의해 집필된 셜록 홈즈를 모티브로 한 작품으로 어린 시절의 홈즈가 처음 탐정의 길을 걷게 되는 의문의 연쇄 살인 사건을 다룬 이야기이다. 음악 분석 결과 브루스 브로튼은 19세기 배경의 영화를 20세기의 음악적 언어로 잘 혼합하여 묘사하였다. 브로튼은 영화의 시대성을 나타내는 것을 중요하게 여겼고, 음향 디자인 측면으로 접근하여 효과음적인 사운드를 많이 구현해냈다. 또한 19세기 영화에 전자 악기의 색이 맞지 않다고 생각했기 때문에 오케스트라를 통하여 악기 음색의 변화, 특수 기법의 사용으로 전자 악기의 색을 나타내는 특징을 보였고, 인물과 상황에 라이트모티프를 설정하여 내용을 암시하게 하여 시청자로 하여금 추리에 가담할 수 있도록 도와주었다. 그리고 교차 편집에 따라 주선율의 오버랩으로 인해 장면의 전환을 효과적으로 표현하였으며, 장소의 변화에 따라 음향과 다이나믹스를 변화시키기도 하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 브루스 브로튼의 음악을 비롯하여 많은 영화 음악 작곡가들의 작품을 연구하기 위한 유익한 참고 문헌으로 활용되기를 바란다.
