애니메이션 <가디언즈(Rise of the Guardians)>의 음악분석을 통한 알렉상드르 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine musical characteristics of the composer of <Rise of the Guardians, 2012> by analyzing the music of fantasy adventure animation <Rise of the Guardians, 2012> among the works of Alexandre Desplat (1961~) who is French composer of film music. To understand the film that is the base of the music, this researcher studied the production company, Dreamworks, production background of the film, and lifetime of the composer and based on them, analyzed music inserted to each stage by film narrative. As a result of the analysis, music is existing in almost of situations of this film, supplements the limits of animation, and becomes the frame of the film with the narrative. The film shows the process that a hero, Jack, finds his own identity and delivers the messages of dream, hope, and belief. Santa Claus and Easter Bunny and Tooth fairy and Sandman that are classic and eternal characters in this film make an effect on making film music the classic symphonic genre, not pop or electric sound for the current trend. The synthetic characters symbolizing complex meaning become the message that the film intends to deliver to audiences. Therefore, a composer provided instruments and themes suitable for each character and made audiences feel the meaning of their personal characters and symbols through music sufficiently, used melody and tune mainly for embodying it through music, and delivered intention and message of the film the most effectively and properly. In conclusion, musical characteristics of Alexandre Desplat in <Rise of the Guardians> are not just description of motion or scene and it becomes the frame of the film with the narrative, supplements the limits of animation, interprets the subject that can be somewhat heavy to be treated in animation softly, lets audiences feel the subject and intention of the film naturally by music all through the film, and covers proper tone and color on the film. The music plays a key role to make <Rise of the Guardians> intended by director and production company a work of different tone and mood from existing animations. This thesis should be helpful to study on Desplat actively in the future. ;본 논문은 프랑스 출신의 영화음악 작곡가 알렉상드르 데스플라(Alexandre Desplat, 1961~)의 작품 중 판타지 모험 애니메이션<가디언즈(Rise of the Guardians), 2012>의 음악을 분석함으로 <가디언즈>에 나타난 작곡가의 음악적 특징을 알아보고자 하였다. 음악의 토대가 되는 영화에 대해 이해하기 위해 제작사인 드림웍스, 영화의 제작배경, 작곡가의 생애에 관하여 연구하였고 이를 바탕으로 영화의 내러티브에 따라 각 단계에 삽입된 음악을 분석하였다. 분석결과, 본 영화에서 음악은 거의 모든 상황에 존재하여 애니메이션의 한계를 보완해주며 내러티브와 함께 영화의 골격이 되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 영화는 주인공 잭이 자신의 정체성을 찾아가는 과정을 보여주며 꿈과 희망, 믿음에 관한 메시지를 전한다. 영화에 등장하는 산타클로스, 부활절 토끼와 같은 클래식하고 영속적인 캐릭터들은 영화의 음악이 현재 트랜드에 맞는 팝이나 전자 사운드가 아닌 클래식한 심포닉 장르가 되게 하는데 영향을 미쳤고 이들 캐릭터의 종합은 곧 영화가 관객에게 전하고자 하는 메시지가 된다. 이에 작곡가는 각각의 캐릭터에 적합한 악기와 테마를 부여하여 그들의 인격적 특성과 상징하는 것의 의미가 음악으로 충분히 느껴지도록 하였다. 그것을 구현해내는데 선율과 음색을 주요하게 사용하여 효과적이고 적절하게 영화의 의도와 메시지를 전달하였다. 결론적으로 <가디언즈>에 나타난 알렉상드르 데스플라의 음악적 특징은 단순히 동작이나 장면만을 묘사하는 것에 그친 것이 아니라 내러티브와 함께 영화의 한 축이 되었다. 애니메이션에서 다루기에 다소 무거울 수 있는 주제를 부드럽게 풀어내어 영화 전반에 걸쳐 영화의 주제와 의도가 음악을 통해 자연스럽게 관객에게 느껴지게 하였고 영화에 적절한 톤과 컬러를 입혀주었다. 이러한 음악은 감독과 제작사가 의도한 <가디언즈>가 기존의 애니메이션과는 다른 톤과 분위기의 작품이 되게 하는데 핵심적인 역할을 하였다. 본 논문이 데스플라에 관한 연구가 앞으로도 활발히 진행되는데 보탬이 되기를 바란다.
