Abstract
The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching on elementary students’ music learning motive. For this purpose, 100 elementary 3rd graders were sampled to be subject to a test. A 8-session Korean traditional music teaching guide was developed using the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching. It was applied to the sample students for 8 weeks from March to April, 2019; each session continued 40 minutes. The sample students were subject to the T-test before and after the test to analyze their music learning motive and verify the effects of the teaching guide. The research tool used for this study was the scale developed by Hruska (2001) and used by Megan M. Dray (2014); it was modified and complemented again by the researcher to be suitable to this study. The sub-areas of the learning motive consisted of 3 areas: external motive, internal motive and attributed motive. The results of the test can be summarized as follows; First, subjects’ external motive for the music learning was found positive in all sub-areas: influence from life, influence from parents and influence from teacher. As such, it was found that the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching was positively correlated with the elementary students’ external motive for music learning. In other words, it was found that the elementary students would like to be recognized by others through the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching, feeling that the Korean traditional music would be helpful to their life, making their life more energetic and happier. Secondly, subjects’ internal motive for music learning was found positive in all the sub-areas of the Korean traditional music class. Namely, the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching was found to affect subjects’ mind-set for the Korean traditional music, their preparation for the music class and their satisfaction with the music class. Thirdly, subjects’ attributed motive for music learning showed a positive change in all sub-areas. As discussed above, this study could verify that the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching would help the elementary students to experience a positive change in their belief in their ability and will. The subjects were found to think that the efforts would be more important than the inborn talent. After all, this study that analyzed the effects of the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching on elementary students’ music learning motive verified that the music teaching would have positive effects on all of the 3 sub-areas of elementary students’ music learning motives. This study may well be significant in that it explored the ways to apply the Integrated Theme-Based Korean Traditional Music Teaching to the classroom and verified its effects on elementary students’ music learning.
