Abstract
이를 통해 참여자들의 신체 활동을 통한 운동 능, 지, 심소양이 개발되었고, 연구 참여자들은 운동을 문화로 경험하며 향유력이 향상되었음을 발견하였다.;he purpose of this study is to explore the development, operation, and effects of a humanitas-oriented exercise program aimed at fostering competency to enjoy sports by administering an exercise program for senior members of a community center. To elaborate, this study seeks to investigate the compositional and operational process of the humanitas-oriented exercise program and to analyze the effects of the program so as to investigate its possibility as a cultural and educational content for the elderly and to understand its implications. The humanitas-oriented exercise program is different from the existing functionality and performance-oriented exercise programs for the elderly in that it is an integrated educational program focused on enabling the elderly to enjoy sports as a culture and a game. This study is a case study of a humanitas-oriented exercise program developed for the elderly to foster their competency to enjoy sports by allowing them to experience sports in various ways and cultivate their inherent sport literacy. To address the purpose of this study, I posed three questions: first, what is a humanitas-oriented exercise program for fostering competency to enjoy sports comprised of? Second, how is the program carried out? And third, what is the effect of such a program? Senior members of a community center were selected as study participants for a number of reasons. First, they are marginalized in terms of exercise culture. The humanitas-oriented exercise program intends to bring about a positive change in the daily lives of the elderly who have limited choices in sport activities due to weakened physical functions and believe themselves to be unfit for exercise. Second, the community center is a place where its senior members spend time amongst themselves, disconnected from the outside. The program gives the reclusive members a chance to communicate with outsiders and through the process, remind them that they are members of society. Third, the program involves safe chair exercises that ensure an integrated educational experience that encompasses both the emotional and intellectual aspects of exercising. Study participants were 15 volunteers of a senior club at a multi-residential complex comprised of 51 building units located at Seoul’s M District. A total of 12 classes were offered to these 15 participants, with each class lasting 90 minutes and held at three different activity stations. The program was developed based on the Hanaro Model, which is one of several humanitas-oriented exercise programs that introduced direct and indirect ways to experience sports in smaller groups called paeand over activity stations called teo. Being an exercise program for seniors, interactive pedagogy and self-directed learning strategies were applied. Each activity station – Physical, Art, Knowledge – focused on building competencies in the respective areas of exercise –physical ability, artistic ability, and knowledge ability. In the Physical teo, participants were introduced to chair-based exercises (CBEs) that aimed at improving leg and arm strength, agility, aerobic endurance, and balance while moving. In the Art teo, participants were led to experience sports culture in combination with art activities, and in the Knowledge teo, they were introduced to facts about exercising from audiovisual materials and discussions. This study took a total of 10 months from July, 2018 to April, 2019. Before the program was launched, a period of 18 days was spent building rapport with the senior members at the center, assessing the current status, understanding the participants-to-be, and other preliminary investigation activities. Through this preliminary investigation process, the program was developed with the task of setting up its direction to improve the current status and create solutions for the issues identified, and to address the task of positively influencing the everyday lives of seniors through an increased competency to enjoy sports. Data collection for the study came from personal interviews, observations, non-participatory observations such as video and audio recordings, daily activity logs, drawings and photos, instructor reports, exercise logs, and other program-related materials. The study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data. Data analysis was performed in step with the basic qualitative methods of phenomenological research and categorical data analysis while also following the cyclical process characteristic of an action research. Reliability of the study was checked through the method of triangulation – a panel of experts, member check, and peer debriefing. Through this process, findings of the study are as follows: The humanitas-oriented exercise program for the elderly to foster competency to enjoy sports used for this study provided an opportunity for the participants to experience sports culture and in effect, gain a multi-dimensional experience overlooked by existing programs. The content of the program was developed through pre-examination and observation as well as through document research. Its theoretical framework was revised and supplemented from the Hanaro Model, a humanitas-oriented exercise program developed by Eui-chang Choi (2008). The study participants were seniors at a community center whose mean age was 82. Most of the participants had no previous experience in physical and cultural activities, possessed a low subjective health index, physical efficacy, and learning motivation. A strategic approach was necessary to foster competency to enjoy sports through a humanitas-oriented exercise program for such participants. In other words, a strategy was devised to encourage participants to enjoy sports as a physical, an artistic, and a learning activity through the development of their inherent physical, artistic, learning competencies. The program was developed in consideration of the requirements of the elderly participants as well as the situational and functional constraints that bind these participants. The development direction was on an organic, integrated program, an everyday creative program, a comprehensive program that is safe and brings joy to its participants. The ultimate goal of the program was to foster the competency to enjoy sports in seniors in order to bring about happiness in life. As a second-tier strategy, the program attempted to extend the spectrum of experiences and provide various opportunities for a multi-dimensional experience through organic and integrated activities – cultivating capability through cell activity and physical/art/knowledge activities, fostering performable literacy to exercise, knowledgeable literacy to exercise, attitudinal literacy to exercise, and improving the communication between participants and between participant and instructor. The communication improvement satisfied needs for self-expression and increased self-confidence and self-efficacy. The lessons from the program were linked to daily life which increased the participants’ motivation to learn and led to their making exercise a daily ritual and habit. The customized program for the elderly had the effect of enhancing learning achievement and self-efficacy through task-oriented classes tailored to participants. The program gave participants who were on the reluctant side a motive to lower their guards about outside programs and outsiders, and potentially be more open to accepting and participating in future programs. The educational effects of the humanitas-oriented exercise program were to develop a comprehensive and organic program that will improve understanding of sports in general, reduce fear of injury, and to provide the elderly with various types of sports. It was also an opportunity for the members of the senior center to come together and think about teamwork and build a sense of community. Lastly, participants who, with their low subjective health index, had a tendency of relating to health in a negative manner, saw a change in their perception about the humanitas-oriented exercise program to see their participation in the program to be not out of fear but out of love and affection for oneself. Participants were also given a chance to partake in a more active role as learners as opposed to their previously passive roles as center members. They were given an opportunity to exhibit their artwork and also take part in the program graduation ceremony. This raised their sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy, and the program’s peer teaching methods offered re-socialization opportunities. There was also a change in the self-perceptions of the participants. Participants were able to narrow the psychological and social gaps they had felt about exercise and physical activities. A program comprised of enjoyable activities brought a change in perception that made participants become confident about performing physical activities that can be enjoyed together. Through these activities, physical, art, knowledge skills were developed and a competency to enjoy sports was achieved.
