페이스 링골드(Faith Ringgold)의 작품에 나타난 정치적 태도

Abstract

본 논문은 페이스 링골드(Faith Ringgold, 1930- )의 작품에 나타난 정치적 태도를 살펴본 연구이다. 링골드는 아프리카계 미국인 여성 작가로, 본격적으로 활동을 시작한 1960년대 초반부터 정치적 의식이 표출된 작품을 꾸준히 선보여 왔다. 그녀는 흑인여성의 정체성과 그 뿌리를 탐구하면서 인종차별 및 여성 문제에 대해 끊임없이 숙고하였다. 이에 본 연구는 전 시기의 링골드 작품을 전체적으로 분석해봄으로써 그녀의 정치적 태도가 작품 속에 어떻게 표출되고 있는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 링골드에게 영향을 끼친 제2차 세계대전 이후 미국의 정치·사회적 배경과 미술계의 상황을 파악하고, 링골드의 작품들을 미술사적 맥락에서 고찰하였다. 링골드의 정치적 태도는 미국 내 흑인여성의 사회적 위치와 개인사적 배경이 맞물린 모습으로 전개되었다. 그녀가 활발히 활동한 1950년대 후반의 미국은 제2차 세계대전 이후 정치적 위상이 격상되었을 뿐만 아니라, 경제적으로도 전례 없는 번영을 누렸다. 그러나 1960년대에 들어서면서 미국 사회의 풍요로움과 번영의 이면에 수많은 불평등과 그로 인한 소외계층이 자리잡기 시작하였다. 이는 곧 흑인 민권운동, 여성주의 운동 등으로 나타났고, 더 나아가 반문화 운동, 반전 운동으로 이어지게 되었다. 더불어 전후 미국 미술계 또한 당시의 정치·사회적 상황만큼이나 복잡한 양상을 보였다. 이처럼 당시의 미국 사회와 미술계는 새로운 것에 대한 갈망이 컸고 이를 위한 변화를 요구하였다. 이러한 시대적 상황 속에서 링골드는 당시 미국 사회에 일어났던 혼돈과 변화를 몸소 겪게 되었다. 링골드는 미국 할렘에서 태어나고 자라면서 흑인 여성으로서 온갖 차별과 멸시를 받아야만 했다. 또한 당시 미술계의 남성중심적 구조와 유색인종 여성 작가라는 정체성은 그녀가 예술가로 성장하는 데 제약이 되었다. 이에 링골드는 흑인여성의 사회문제의 원인인 성차별과 인종차별이라는 이중적 억압구조에 반기를 들게 되었다. 링골드는 당시 흑인 민권운동과 여성주의 운동을 목도하면서 시대의 변화를 실감하게 되었고, 이를 통해 키워나간 정치적 의식을 작품 속에 다양하게 드러냈다. 또한 당시 여러 예술, 정치운동에 직접 참여하면서 현실의 변화를 위한 주체적인 목소리를 내고자 하였다. 이러한 배경을 바탕으로 본 연구는 본론에서 링골드의 작품에 나타난 정치적 태도의 양상을 크게 세 가지로 나누어 고찰하였다. 링골드의 초창기 작품은 1960년대의 화두였던 흑인 민권운동을 주로 다루고 있다. 즉, 그녀는 주류사회에서 소외된 흑인의 모습을 담아냄으로써 부조리한 현실을 피력하고자 한 것이다. 아울러 18세기 노예제도 당시의 인종차별적 사건들도 작품에 반영하였다. 1970년대를 넘어가면서부터 링골드는 주로 여성주의 시각을 반영하여 여성에 관한 문제를 다루었다. 당시 사회와 미술계에 만연해 있던 남성중심적 체제에 반기를 드는 차원에서 수공예인 퀄트기법을 작품에 사용하였다. 그녀는 여성의 역할과 지위를 반영한 여성 이미지와 조각 작품을 통해 불평등한 성의 위계구조를 비판하였다. 마지막으로, 링골드는 흑인으로서의 자긍심을 표출하기 위해 작품에 흑인 문화를 반영함으로써 그들의 독자성을 강조하였다. 이후 흑인 사회에서 영향력이 컸던 인물들을 작품에서 재조명함으로써 흑인의 자긍심과 민족의식을 드러내기도 했다. 이처럼 링골드는 작품을 통해 미국 사회의 억압적이고 차별적인 모습을 증언하였음을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 링골드의 작품에 나타난 정치적 태도를 살펴본 결과, 그녀가 미국의 사회문제에 지속적인 관심을 갖고 사회의 리얼리티를 작품에 담아낸 작가라는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 링골드의 작가정신은 사회 속에 잠재된 권력구조에 대한 비판적인 태도에서 비롯된 것으로, 그녀는 자신이 살아가고 있는 시대의 모습을 동시대의 사람들과 함께 공유하고자 한 것이다. 이처럼 링골드가 정치운동에 적극 참여하면서 중심부가 아닌 흑인여성의 이야기를 꾸준히 작품 속에 담아내고 시대의 다양한 목소리를 추구한 점에서 그 미술사적인 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.;This study examined the political attitudes in the paintings by Faith Ringgold (1930-present). She is an African American painter who has consistently revealed artworks expressing political consciousness ever since the early 1960s. She endlessly thought about racial discrimination and gender issues by exploring the identity of African American women and their roots. In this regard, this study examined how her political attitudes are being expressed in her works by comprehensively analyzing the paintings throughout her entire career. For this aim, this study identified the American political and social backgrounds and the status of the art circle after the Second World War, which had immense influence on Ringgold, and examined her paintings in art history context. Her political attitudes unfolded in the form of blending her personal background with social status of African American women. America in the late 1950s, the time when she was painting actively, was the period when political status of America had reached a high level after the Second World War and the U.S. enjoyed unprecedented economic prosperity. However, with the advent of the 1960s, a number of inequality and alienated social classes began to emerge under richness and prosperity of American society. This resulted in African American civil rights movements and gender equality movements and ultimately anti-culture movements and anti-war movements. Furthermore, the American art circle after the war was as sophisticated as the political and social situations of the time. The then-American society and art circle were eager for new things and demanded change. In such a background of the age, Faith Ringgold experienced the chaos and transformations of the American society. As she was growing up in Harlem, Faith Ringgold had to go through all sorts of discrimination and contempt. In addition, the male-centered structure of the art circle and the identity of being a colored female painter were impediments in becoming an artist. In this light, she revolted against the dual suppression structure of gender inequality and racial discrimination, which were grave social matters toward African American women. She felt the transformations of the era while witnessing African American civil rights movements and feminism movements and showed her political consciousness in various forms. Also, she aimed to make subjective voices to make changes in reality by participating in several art and political movements. Based on this background, this study examined the political attitudes by Faith Ringgold in three main aspects. Her initial paintings are mainly about African American civil rights movements, which were the main topic of the 1960s. In other words, she tried to frankly state irrational reality by containing scenes of African Americans being alienated from the mainstream society. Moreover, racial discriminatory incidents during the 18th century slavery were also reflected in her paintings. After the 1970s, she dealt with problems of women after reflecting feminism viewpoint. She used quilt technique, which is handicraft, as a part of revolting against male-dominated art circle. She criticized unequal gender hierarchical structure through feminine images and sculptures reflecting women's roles and status. Lastly, she emphasized African Americans' identity by reflecting American culture to express the pride of being an African American. Afterward, she revealed pride and ethnic consciousness of African Americans by shedding light on the figures who had immense influence in society through paintings. As mentioned previously, Faith Ringgold testified suppressive and discriminatory aspects of American society. As a result of looking into political attitudes in her paintings, this study identified that she was a painter who was constantly interested in American social issues and contained social reality in her artworks. Her mentality as a painter resulted from the critical attitude toward power structure hidden in society and she aimed to share the aspects of the age with others. There are significant meanings in terms of art history in the sense that Faith Ringgold continuously contained the stories of African American women and pursued diverse voices of the era by actively participating in political movements.
