Abstract
If we knew in advance that the abundance and convenience of the industrial society we enjoyed in the last century would pay for our consumption today, what choices would the past have struggled for? Undiscerning industrialization has caused environmental pollution and material waste due to various industrial and household wastes. In particular, clothing wastes due to mass production and fast fashion are serious compared to other industries. Consumers buy trendy newest fashion products at a cheap price and are confident that they are an economic person, but they don't mind about the manufacturing process and after they use them. These problems have become more of society's share than individuals' to deal with. In most developed countries, they actively research sustainable design and consider waste as a valuable resource in the circulation process of resources, not as waste that needs to be simply disposed of. This study supports redesign upcycle activation, to input new life into the industrial waste, a worldwide issue, and revive it in a way to be different from its original use, and hopes to rethink the concept of the resource. In order to achieve the goal, we considered sustainability and sustainable design, the background for the emergence of the upcycle, looked at the redesign for fashion upcycle, and treated reuse and reclamation mainly as upcycle trend since they are mostly used among other methods. In addition, we extracted clothing upcycle brands among international upcycle brands and identified the common features and characteristics of these brands. Based on this, the four important aspects were; the differentiation on the value of the art and scarcity in terms of design, the diversification of communication based on storytelling in semantic aspect, user-centric design through handicraft in the practical aspect, and from an economic perspective, derived insight to create value added by sharing values with the local community and proposed measures to activate fashion upcycle. As a measure of activation, first, it is to increase designers' participation in fashion upcycle and to have companies and designers together carry out upcycle with a partnership. We proposed that the role of designers, who proceed sustainable fashion in leading role of planning, production, distribution, consumption, disposal, collection, decomposition, recomposition/decomposition/transformation, return, material, and redesigning, must be strengthened. Second, we suggested improving fashion industry types to specialize and systematize upcycle to enhance consumers' loyalty, and help companies jump up to become ethical companies. This can be done by consortium composition, where diverse sustainable resource industry, design-related research institutions, design universities participate in the process of companies' planning, production, distribution. The third method is a user-centric way to expand the upcycle culture. In order to enlarge the upcycle culture, the user's personal product should be the main source for upcycling, not a simple event. Having participants directly make the story of an upcycling product will lead to creating autonomous activation about upcycling. This study has a significance as this encourages diverse participation for clothing waste's upcycle fashion activation, and realizes sustainable source and fashion with a developed power of design through progressive and systematic method.
