Abstract
;A stock is receiving much attention from investors who want to pursue higher profits as a means of investment, even though they take some risks under the global trends of low growth and low interest rates. However, the stock market is highly volatile and difficult to be forecast. It is known that individual’s rational decision-making is limited and is affected very much by psychological factors under uncertain future situations. Thus, it is necessary to closely examine the psychological factors that affect the decision-making of investors or investment behaviors in the stock market. The purpose of investors entering a stock market subject to risk is to obtain a return on investment that is greater than the current investment. Investors should forecast the future stock market. The forecasts on the stock market include forecasts on the stock price and the return rate. The framing effect is to draw different decisions by presenting the same contents or questions differently. Likewise, when asking questions forecasting the stock market, it can be expected that the response result may vary depending on whether the questions are asked with a specific number (price) or percentage (return rate). Therefore, this study empirically analyzed whether the framing effect takes place in which the response results of forecasts vary when the stock price is forecast or when the return rate is forecast. In addition, we examined whether the results of forecasts differ depending on the presentation period of the stock price information in the past and whether the results of forecasts differ depending on when it is forecast in the future. For this purpose, we conducted an experimental study using research methods of Glaser et al. (2007) verifying the framing effects depending on the forecast mode in overseas stock markets. After we made two kinds of experimental models for forecasting the stock price and the return rate, we conducted the experiment using online questionnaire with men and women in their 30s - 50s in Seoul and metropolitan areas who have actually experienced stock investment. The stock items that were used in the experimental models were three stocks of which price was upward, flat and downward for the past 6 months and three stocks of which price was upward, flat and downward for the past 3 years among 200 KOSPI stock items in 2010. These stocks were anonymized. The stock items selected for the experimental model had the same information including the order of presenting stock items, expression method of past information (line chart), forecast time in the future (1 month and 6 months later) and guiding statement for the questionnaire. However, the question forecasting stock was associated with stock price and return rate of the stock. The experiment was designed based on research questions. Research question 1 was whether the response values vary depending on the response mode when forecasting the Korean stock market. It consisted of a between-subject design of 2 (forecast mode: price vs. return rate) x3 (trends of stock item: upward vs. flat vs. downward) x3 (response value: upper bound vs. estimate vs. lower bound). Research question 2 was whether there was a difference in response values depending on the presentation period of the stock information in the past. It consisted of a within-subject design of 2 (presentation period of stock information in the past: 6 months vs. 3 years) x3 (response value: upper bound vs. estimate vs. lower bound). Research question 3 was whether there was a difference in response values depending on the forecast time for the stock market. It consisted of a within-subject design of 2 (forecast time: 1 month later vs. 6 months later) x3 (response value: upper bound vs. estimate vs. lower bound). The Mann-Whitney U test was used to analyze the differences in response values for each research question using a total of 276 responses collected through the experiments. Multiple regression analysis was performed to test whether the forecast mode influences the response values while characteristics variables of the respondents were controlled. The main results of this study are summarized as follows. First, for the forecast response value based on the response mode, it was higher degree when responding with the return rate than that when responding with estimate response value and lower bound response value of all items even though the trends of stock information was different in the past. It suggests that the forecast with the stock price is more positive than that with return rate when forecasting the stock market. Second, for the forecast response value based on the presentation period of the stock price information in the past, it was higher degree when the stock price information was presented in 6 months than that when it was done in 3 years. In other words, when forecasting the stock market, it is found that it was more positive when the monthly stock price information in the past was presented than that when the yearly stock price information was done. In addition, the forecast response value depending on the presentation period of stock price information in the past was compared. The results are similar to the first results. When responded with the return rate, it was more positively forecast. Third, for the forecast response value based on the time of forecasting the stock market, it was higher degree when forecasting the market 6 months later than when forecasting the market 1 month later. In other words, when forecasting the stock market in the far future, it is more positive than that when forecasting the stock market in the near future. In addition, the forecast response value depending on the forecast time was compared. The results are similar to the first results. When responded with the return rate, it was more positively forecast. Taken all analytical results together, it is found that there is a framing effect in which there is the difference in results between stock price forecast and return rate forecast when domestic stock investors forecast the stock market. In addition, the trend persistence in the return rate forecast shown in the study of Glaser et al. (2007) was not shown. Domestic stock investors more positively forecast the stock market when they do it with a return rate of all stock items on upward or downward. They are more likely to be optimistic than overseas stock investors. This study is significant, because it reveals behavioral financial factors which can complement the limitation of economic decision-making model in the study on forecasts of the domestic stock market. In addition, this study escapes the message framing which has been mainly handled in the studies on framing effect and sets framing modes of ‘specific number’ and ‘number of percentage’. Thus, this study presents a new perspective which can expand the area of studies on framing effect. We expect that this study will contribute to broadening the understanding of the psychology of stock investors while there are not many studies on framing effects on stock investment.
