Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher’s perception of free semester and its assessment, the actual assessment practice of science subjects in free semester, and the difficulties teachers face in science subjects in free semester, and to find ways to solve them on the subjects of 15 secondary science teachers with experience of assessment in science subjects in free semester since the free semester was fully implemented in 2016. To understand the teacher's perception in detail and in depth, this study was designed as a qualitative research method through questionnaires including descriptive questions and individual interviews, in the questionnaire, the frequency of response was analyzed for the optional items, and descriptive items and personal interviews were analyzed by constant comparison method. The results and conclusions of this study are as follows. First, among the basic directions of the free semester, while there were many teachers who ranked high in ‘student‐centered curriculum management’, ‘teaching method innovation’ and ‘career search activity enhancement’, there were many teachers who ranked low in ‘assessment method change’. Teachers who ranked the chage of assessment method’ as low-priority mentioned ‘lack of objectivity in the assessment of the free semester system’, ‘unreflection of assessment of the free semester system in high school entrance exam’, ‘unpreparation of the system for the assessment of the free semester system’, ‘activity-oriented class and stimulation of students interest in subjects’ are more important than assessment. Meanwhile, most of the teachers who participated in this study understood the basic direction of free semester assessment as "process‐focused assessment" proposed by the Ministry of Education, and other than those, they described ‘activity assessment based on achievement standards’, ‘performance assessment using various methods’, ‘assessment to confirm student’s competences‘, and ‘assessment to describe student characteristics’. In addition, while the teachers who perceived the process‐focused assessment as very positive or positive, explained them focusing on the positive effects of the process‐focused assessment on the students, those teachers who recognized the process‐focused assessment as either normal or negative focused on the difficulties faced by teachers in implementing the process‐focused assessment. Second, the teachers who participated in this study carried out most of the free semester assessment ecommended by the Ministry of Education (2015), but seven teachers close to half of the participants were found not to perform the student self assessment·student peer assessment because of the subjectivity and complexity, and there were some teachers who provided little feedback on the assessment results on account of a lack of time. Also, because there is no assessment method that teachers were allowed not to select for the optional items that answer the assessment method used in the free semester, it was found that the teachers use various assessment methods. However, some teachers explained that they did not use them because they were unfamiliar with the assessment method or because they did not know how to perform the assessment because they did not use the assessment method. Meanwhile, it was found that the teachers who didn't talk at the school council by environmental factors such as the number of teachers in charge of the school year and the attitude of fellow teachers. On the other hand, teachers who did not participate in assessment-related training were found to have only the person in charge can participate in the training, lack of awareness by teachers about the necessity of training, and individual situations of teachers, unlike the teachers' association, not to participate in the training due to the teachers' willingness or voluntary choice of teachers' participation. Third, the teachers involved in this study mentioned difficulties in identifying characteristics of all students, difficulty in field application of training material due to excessive number of students and lack of time and impossibility of accurate assessment, lack of objective evaluation criteria, burden of developing and distributing relevant data and assessment tools, burden of giving feedback to a large number of students, and lack of understanding and passive attitudes by peer teachers about process-focussed assessment. To solve these difficulties, the participating teachers presented specific assessment items to their students or selected criteria through consultation among teachers, referring to other school cases, and recording student characteristics at intervals, as a solution. In addition, the government required institutional support, such as the need for standards and guidelines at the policy level and the reduction of the number of students per teacher.
