Abstract
Entering the 21st century the cultural contents industry developed and the quality of life improved, leading to a continuous rise in interest and demand for performance arts. A branch of performance arts that has shown noticeable growth as of late is the field of musicals. As a combination of art forms, musicals are popular and reflect the cultural desires of contemporary people the best. Planners of performance arts have stayed true to the lyrics, script, choreography, directing, and music, the components of musicals, but as the standards of the audience rose, they began to expand their interest and range of investment in visual components as well, such as in stage art and stage costumes. In the production of musicals, the styling of stage costumes visually convey the message the artists wish to express, and aid the audience in understanding the period's background, personality of the character, social standing, and other contextual cues. Accordingly, this study selects the styling of the stage costumes of the musical 'Elizabeth' as the subject of the study, and seeks to break free from costumes based on historical background, and reinterpret various styling elements in a contemporary fashion to create a new fashion image. The main character of the musical 'Elizabeth', Queen Elizabeth, is a historical character, which makes the research of her historical background convenient and shows 3 characteristics of the 19th century, the romantic style, crinoline style, and bustle style, in one era. The paper seeks to propose the styling of the stage costumes of 'Elizabeth' with this variety as the foundation. The purpose of the study is to express the era with the unique silhouette of the 19th century, while simultaneously proposing a contemporary styling of stage costumes through the costume details, materials, color, props and hair, makeup, and etc, to improve the theatrical expression of musicals and expand the range of expression in styling. The content and method of the study is as the following First, the concept and stage costumes of the musical are researched through literary and internet mediums, and the background and characteristics of outfits of the 19th century, the time of Queen Elizabeth, are analyzed. Second, 6 works of styling of the 3 themes are to be presented, based on the characteristics of the romantic style, crinoline style, and bustle style, which are analyzed with theoretical considerations as the basis. The conclusions gained from the study of the work is the following. First, the outfit styling of the 19th century, the background of 'Elizabeth' the musical, are characterized by the romantic style era, crinoline style era, and the bustle style era. The unique silhouette structure of the era were able to create visual variety when applied to stage costumes and props. Second, using achromatic colors as the dominant colors with silver and gold as accent colors allowed the expression of emotion that transcended periods. The change of colors, from ivory, grey, and black, allowed the effective expression of the change in emotion in the life of the main character, Elizabeth, based on her situation and psychology. Third, the use of transparent, checkered organza and non-transparent organza gave body and splendor to the skirt, and using the corset with sturdy leather and embossing material allowed the costume to tightly fit to the body, which gave a strong contrast in the silhouette line. Also, the tight, consecutive layers of the non-transparent organza in the design of the neckline and the puffed sleeves expressed the stage costume with a grand and modern sophisticated beauty. Fourth, the coordination of the tiara, fan, umbrella, shoes, and other accessories and props designed in the shape of a scaled-down 19th century petticoat highlighted the musical costume's grandeur, the period's characteristic, and modern sensitivity all at once. Fifth, the change in age and emotion of the female lead who used pink blush on bright skin and black smokey makeup, large, puffed upstyle hair and updo hairstyles, and presented in various hairdos and makeup based on each theme, could be distinctly expressed. As presented, this study proposed a break from stage costumes as an outfit simply worn by an actor/actress, towards a shift to stage costumes becoming an important element of performance art that brings enjoyment to the audience and describes the characteristics of the period and the character, and a new styling was proposed accordingly. It is hoped that the research of musical stage costume styling can be expanded, to stay a step ahead of the promotion and marketing of musicals and the rising standards of the audience, through this essay, and it is hoped that this can serve as the basis for the continual development in the field of styling.
