Abstract
There have been a lot of studies about learning English using songs and many of them demonstrated that songs can be effective learning tools for English learning recently. However, most studies about learning English using songs focus on the effects of using songs on English listening and speaking rather than vocabulary targeting for elementary school students. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of writing English lyrics using targeted English vocabulary along with melodies of Korean songs on learners’ vocabulary learning and affective attitudes toward vocabulary learning. This study was conducted targeting for Korean students in the third grade of a middle school located in Seoul for about six weeks. All participating students were divided into one control group who learned English vocabulary in a traditional way and one experimental group who learned English vocabulary by writing English lyrics using targeted English vocabulary along with the melodies of Korean songs. There were 17 students in each group. The same targeted English vocabulary was taught to both groups explicitly by the researcher. After they learned the targeted English vocabulary, the control group was asked to do vocabulary exercises whereas the experimental group was asked to write English lyrics using targeted English vocabulary along with the melodies of Korean songs. To determine whether there was a significant difference in students’ vocabulary learning before and after the experiments, pre-test and post-test were conducted immediately after the experiments. In addition, pre-survey and post-survey with each group were conducted to identify any changes in students’ affective attitudes toward vocabulary learning. After the post-test and post-survey were completed, a delayed-test was done a week later after the post-test and post-survey to examine the effects of English vocabulary learning through writing English lyrics on students’ long-term memory. The major results of this study are as follows. First, there was no significant difference between two groups regarding short-term memory even though each group showed significant increase in the post-test compared to the pre-test. In addition, there was no significant difference between two groups regarding receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge although both groups achieved higher scores of receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge in the post-test compared to the pre-test. This result indicates that both methods enhance overall vocabulary learning. Second, according to post and delayed-test results, there was no meaningful difference between two groups in terms of long-term memory, yet both groups obtained higher scores in the delayed-test compared to the post-test. In addition, no meaningful difference between two groups in terms of receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge was shown in the delayed-test. Therefore, it is hard to determine which method has more positive effects on students’ long-term memory. Third, it was shown that there was no significant difference between high and low-proficiency students of the control and experimental group. However, only high and low-proficiency students of the experimental group showed significant improvement in the post-test compared to pre-test. In addition, no significant improvement of receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge between high and low-proficiency students of the control and experimental group was shown in the post-test. The result of post-survey showed that there was no significant change in overall affective attitudes toward vocabulary learning between two groups. However, all high and low-proficiency students of the experimental group showed significant change in the post-survey compared to the pre-survey with regard to overall affective attitudes toward vocabulary learning. Moreover, most students in the experimental group showed positive responses to open questions of the post-survey. Thus, writing English lyrics had more positive effects on both high and low-proficiency students of the experimental group compared to the high and low-proficiency students of the control group. Based on these findings, pedagogical implications for the current English education in Korea are as follows. First, both methods of traditional vocabulary learning and vocabulary learning through writing English lyrics using targeted English vocabulary along with the melodies of Korean songs should be used complementarily in schools. Second, more studies about effects of writing English lyrics through collaborative learning on vocabulary learning should be conducted, which will encourage students to interact with each other while writing English lyrics. Third, since this study targets for middle school students, there should be more studies about vocabulary learning through writing English lyrics using English vocabulary along with the melodies of Korean songs targeting for high school students.
