경계에서 살아가기

Abstract

This Thesis focuses on the researcher’s journey to find the ambiguous world - not easily understood - and to seek a way for the attitudes of the researcher who must live in this world. We exist in our present that constantly changes. It is difficult to identify where we truly belong. The present is only identified with the passing of our past and the approaching future but we always live in the present; life occurs between two different boundaries. Therefore this thesis contemplates the boundaries where one stays in the present. How the boundaries look in the world is examined through the concept of ‘Rhizome’ by Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari; the researcher conducts ceramic works based on their concept of boundaries. Deleuze and Guattari have a positive view of ambiguous things and consider them possibilities for creation and of great potential. In this point of view boundaries are not meant to separate things but it is a field where relationships and exchanges arise in the moment. They exist in inter-state moments where events occur by escape; they continue to create one’s life. In this process the researcher finds similarity between forming life and forming how ceramic works develop in the process of drying and hardening clay and glaze. Both make changes on the outside and in their inner characteristics. How their properties change until the final process inspires the researcher to see his status within the state of change by finding the meaning of the elements in his surroundings. As a result, the researcher attempts to abstract meaningful moments in his life in his ceramics. The organized process is described in this thesis. To the researcher his art represents traces of events occurring in one’s life. Events arise every moment and the relationships among them create meaning. The created meanings inter-relate them between the outside and inside and mediate them with the interactively running flow. The researcher pays attention to this flow and process while focusing on the making of ceramics in order to extend his work and put instill within them. This thesis is the researcher’s first step into the world: creating maps by putting signs on ambiguous places through the process of recording his actions. It is inevitable to feel fear in life but the researcher attempts to recognize it as one of the states among many boundaries and to accept it with an experimental attitude. The researcher may fall in a hole and face difficulties while creating his own territory among boundaries and going across different boundaries. But he has a willingness to leave his own traces and connect them to be a part of his own life.;본 연구는 연구자에게 모호하고 파악하기 어려웠던 세계와 그 안에서 살아가야 하는 본인의 삶에 대한 태도를 모색하는 과정에 관한 것이다. 매 순간 변화하는 현재에 존재하는 우리는 자신이 속해 있는 곳에 대하여 정의내리기 쉽지 않다. 현재에 대한 규정은 지나간 과거나 다가올 미래로 밖에 표현할 수 없지만 우리는 항상 지금의 순간을 살아가는 존재이기에 삶이란 여러 경계에서 살아가는 것이라고 생각하였다. 따라서 본 논문은 지금 내가 머무는 순간의 영역인 경계지대에 대한 고찰이다. 연구자는 우리가 위치해 있는 세계인 경계지대가 어떠한 모습인지 질 들뢰즈(Gilles Deleuze)와 펠릭스 가타리(Felix Guattari)의‘리좀(Rhizome)’을 통해 알아보고 이를 경계지대에 대한 근거로 삼아 도자 작업을 진행하였다. 불확실한 것들을 긍정적인 시각으로 바라보면서 창조의 가능성을 지닌, 잠재성의 영역으로 여기는 들뢰즈와 가타리를 통해 경계지대는 영역을 구분 짓는 경계가 아닌 순간을 점유하면서 관계와 교류를 일으키는 장(場, feild)임을 알 수 있었다. 경계지대는 사이층(interstrate)에 존재하며, 탈주를 통해 사건이 일어나는 곳임과 동시에 누군가의 삶으로 이어지는 곳이다. 연구자는 삶을 이루는 과정과 도자가 변모하는 과정에서 유사성을 찾을 수 있었다. 흙과 유약은 건조와 소성 과정을 거치며 외형적인 모습뿐만 아니라 내면적인 성질 또한 변화하는 속성을 지닌다. 완결된 모습을 갖추기까지 자신의 모습을 변화해 나가는 점토의 물성을 통하여 연구자는 주변에 흩어져 있는 요소들의 의미를 찾아내어 새로운 배치로 자신의 모습을 변모시켜나가야 하는 삶을 엿볼 수 있었다. 따라서 연구자는 삶에 의미를 남기는 사건들을 자신만의 시각으로 추상화하는 작업을 진행하였고 작업의 흐름은 논문 연구의 차례를 따른다. 연구자에게 예술 활동은 삶을 살아가면서 남기는 사건들의 기록이다. 사건은 매 순간 발생하면서 사건과 사건 사이의 관계를 통해 의미들을 생성한다. 생성된 의미들은 내·외적으로 서로를 관여시키고 사이에서 양방향으로 매개하는 흐름을 만들어 내는데 이러한 흐름과 과정에 주목하여 제작 과정 자체를 작업의 영역으로 확장하고 연구자의 의미를 담으려 하였다. 연구자에게 본 논문은 세상을 향해 나아가는 첫 걸음의 기록임과 동시에 명확하지 않은 경계마다 지표를 세워 지도를 그리는 것이었다. 앞으로 연구자의 앞에 펼쳐질 삶에서 느끼게 될 불안감은 불가피하겠지만 이를 새로운 경계지대로 인식하면서 실험적인 태도로 삶을 이행해나가려 한다. 여러 경계 위에서 나만의 지대를 형성하고 또 다른 지대로 이동하는 과정 동안 구멍에 빠지기도 하고 난관에 봉착하기도 하겠지만 이를 뛰어넘어 나만의 또 다른 흔적들을 남기고 삶이라는 지대를 연결해나가고자 한다.
