한국 웹툰의 여성 재현 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 고전소설의 여성 주인공의 유형을 분류하고, 고전소설 주인공의 유형을 따라 웹툰에 주인공 및 공동 주인공으로 등장하는 여성 인물을 분류하는 한편 각각의 서사적 특성을 분석하고자 하며, 이를 바탕으로 고전소설의 여성 주인공의 유형을 웹툰에서 계승·재현하고 있음을 논하고 한국에서 재현되는 허구적 서사 속 캐릭터의 특징을 밝히는 데에 목적을 둔다. 웹툰이란 인터넷에서 연재되며 스크롤툰, 컷툰, 무빙툰 등의 형식으로 읽을 수 있는 만화를 말하며, 본 논문에서는 연재되는 웹툰의 작품수가 본격적인 증가세를 보이며 웹툰 시장이 확장되기 시작한 2012년도부터 현재까지의 기간 동안 연재를 시작해 완결되었거나 연재 중인 작품들을 분석 대상으로 삼았다. 고전소설과 웹툰은 대중의 지지를 얻어온 매체이며, 대중의 현실을 반영하거나 대리만족을 시켜준다는 것에서 공통점을 찾을 수 있다. 2장에서는 웹툰에서 찾아볼 수 있는 여성 주인공의 유형을 인물들의 행적과 서사의 전개에 따라 박씨부인 유형, 장화홍련 유형, 그리고 춘향 유형으로 구분하는 한편 고전소설 원전과의 서사상의 유사점을 찾아내 분석한다. 이 때 각 인물군이 보여주는 원전과의 연결지점에 따라 분석의 초점이 달라지는데, 박씨부인 유형의 인물의 경우 인물이 타인, 특히 남성에게 의존하지 않고 독보적인 능력을 보여주는 방식과 인물이 영웅적 서사를 이행함으로써 다른 인물에게 구조와 조력의 역할을 수행하는 양상에 대해 분석한다. 다음으로 장화홍련 유형의 인물군의 경우 인물이 겪게 되는 변화를 보여주는 방식과 난관을 이겨내기 위해 만나게 되는 조력자가 서사에 미치는 영향의 양상을 제시하며, 끝으로 춘향 유형의 인물군의 경우 인물과 남성 인물과의 애정관계 형성에서 겪게 되는 변화와 인물이 애정관계를 위해 수행하는 역할에 있어서의 원전의 재현 방식에 대해 밝힌다. 3장에서는 웹툰의 주인공과 고전소설의 주인공을 비교했을 때 드러나는 주요 차이점에 대해 분석한다. 이 차이점은 크게 시대적인 환경의 차이점에서 기인된 사항과 캐릭터 연구의 발달로 인한 캐릭터의 발전 및 다양화에서 기인된 사항으로 나뉜다. 전자의 경우 고전소설이 유행했을 당시 가부장적인 분위기가 지배적이었던 사회 제도가 고전소설의 주인공의 인간관계 형성 양상에 미친 영향에 대해 알아보는 한편, 그 영향이 덜해진 웹툰의 주인공과의 비교·분석을 통해 도출할 수 있는 의미를 논한다. 후자의 경우 먼저 웹툰 주인공이 가질 수 있는 특성 중 하나로 제시된 평범함이 웹툰 캐릭터 형성에 있어 고전소설 주인공의 특성과 비교했을 때 가지는 의미와, 평범한 인물이 고전소설 속 인물의 행적을 재현하는 방식에 대해 분석한다. 다음으로 웹툰에 새롭게 등장한 여성 주인공 유형에 대해 소개하는 한편 이 유형의 주인공이 주목을 받게 된 이유에 대해 논하며, 이를 바탕으로 알 수 있는 캐릭터의 발전 가능성을 시사한다. 4장에서는 앞서 분석한 내용을 바탕으로 웹툰에서 형성되는 젠더이미지가 가지는 의의와 다양화의 가능성에 대해 밝히고자 한다. 한국 웹툰에서 여성 주인공들이 보여주는 모습은 자아실현에 대한 의지를 바탕으로 독립적이고 자율적인 사회적 위치를 차지하고자 노력한다. 웹툰에서 보여주는 젠더이미지는 여성이 겪는 사회적 부조리에 대한 담론을 제시하는 동시에 그 부조리를 극복하고 사회적 성평등을 이루기 위한 다원적인 시선을 제시할 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 본 논문은 웹툰의 젠더이미지의 원전을 분석하고 발전의 가능성을 시사했다는 점에서 의의가 있으나, 초기단계의 연구이기 때문에 아직 그 깊이가 부족하다. 이는 후속연구를 통해 보완되어야 할 것이다.;This study classifies the heroins of Korean classical novels, and is designed to categorize the female main characters of Korean webtoons and their characteristic narratives according to the classification of classical novel heroins. The purpose of this classification is to discuss that webtoon inherits and reproduces the category of classical novel heroins, and to show the features of characters that are displayed in Korean fictional narratives. Webtoon means the cartoon genre that are updated on the internet and could be read in forms of scroll toon, cut toon, or moving toon. This article is focused on analyzing webtoon works that have been updated between year 2012 and the present, because from the year 2012 the number of works that started updating showed a remarkable increase, and also the webtoon market started an aggressive expansion. The classical novel and webtoon are the same in that they both have won the support of the public, and they have either reflected the reality of the public or allowed them to obtain vicarious satisfaction. The chapter 2 of this study is to categorize the heroin characters of webtoon into three classes, Madam Park class, Janghwa and Hongryeon class, and Chunhyang class, according to the activities of the characters and the narrative flow, and to analyze the narrative similarities between webtoon and the original classic novel. In this chapter the focusing point of analysis differ among each group, in terms of the link point between webtoon and the classic novel. First, analysis about Madam Park class would be focused on the character’s way of her showing outstanding ability without depending on the male characters, and also how she performs the hero’s narrative and thereby carries out the role of rescuer and helper to the other characters. Secondly, in case of Janghwa and Hongryeon class, the study will discuss the progress of change in her own identity and ideology that the character undergoes, and how the character’s male supporter, whom she meets in order to overcome the problem, influences the narrative. Lastly as for Chunhyang class, the study will focus on the aspect of change that the character goes through in the progress of forming intimate relationship between male character, and how the methods that the character performs in order to form and maintain the relationship are similar to the original classical novels. In chapter 3, the study will analyze the main differences that show up in comparison between the heroins of webtoon and the classical novel. The reason for the difference varies by the matter related to the difference of social circumstances of each era, and the matter caused according to the character study development, and the resulting character development and diversification. As for discussing the former reason, the study will focus on how the dominantly patriarchal social regulations of the era when classical novels were popular influenced the depiction of social relationships of the classical novel heroins, and by comparing it to the webtoon heroins—who are more free from the patriarchal influence—, depict the meaning that could be carried out. In the discussion the latter reason, the study will first analyze about how the quality of being ordinary, one possible element of webtoon characters, can have meaning in comparison to the elements of classical novel heroins, and how the‘ordinary’character reproduces the performance of classical novel heroins. Next, the study will introduce the new heroin category of webtoon, and through discussing the reason why this heroin category grew to attract readers, suggests the possibility of character development. In chapter 4, the study will be depicting about the meaning of the gender image that webtoon shows, and the possibility of character diversification. The heroins of Korean webtoon basically have willingness for self-realization, and try to achieve independent social status. This depiction of gender image in webtoon could be meaningful in that it suggests further discussion in relation to the social irrationality that women have to undergo, and shows diverse points of view in order to overcome the irrationality and achieve social gender equality. The meaning of this study lies in that it analyzed the source of webtoon’s gender image and depicted the possibility of development, but still lacks in its profundity because it is still at an early age of study. This problem has to be solved by follow-up studies.
