Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide an insight in regards to the flexibility and fluidity of Korean culture applying the Theory of Cultural Hybridism. Especially, this study analyzes the hybridization process of the Korean traditional music with the social change after the 20th century as the backdrop. The Korean traditional music has pertained a connotation that it has been rigid and, therefore, departed from the interest of the general public. On the other hand, the hybrid form of traditional music has appeared in the twenty-first century with the globalization. Consequently, the hybrid-traditional music has been newly receiving attention from the public. This study, however, claims that the hybridization of Korean traditional music is not a new phenomenon and it has been existed in the twentieth century. This study finds its ground on the framework of two theorists. First, this study relies on the theory of Homi K. Bhabha(born in 1949) who has studied about post-colonialism. Secondly, it relies on the theory of Néstor García Canclini(born in 1939) who has thoroughly studied the hybrid culture after the introduction of neo-liberalism into Latin America. Bhabha’s theory regarding colonialism and post-colonialism is used to understand the hybridization under the colonial era and the modernized period of Korea. Garcia Canclini’s theory is applied to shed light on the hybridization under the modernism and the globalization. This study classifies the time period of Korean history into three belows: (1) The period of hybridization under the colonialism (from colonial era to Park Chung-hee regime) (2) The period of hybridization under the post-colonialism (Chun Do-hwan regime to the beginning of twenty-first century) (3) The period of hybridization under the globalization (in the twenty-first century) In conclusion, the Korean traditional music has been hybridized throughout the aforementioned periods adapting to the changes of the society and the newly introduced culture after the twentieth century based on the musical form of late Joseon era. During and after the colonial era, the music has been changed borrowing the form of western music. As the result, some characteristic of traditional music has been extinct. However, the hybridization was the reason of that the traditional music could survive through the history to the present era. In the late twentieth century, the musical form has been hybridized under the post-colonialism. There were movements to bring back the almost lost folk music. Furthermore, ‘fusion-gugak(traditional music fused with other genre)’ has appeared with an effort to popularize the traditional music. In the globalization era, variety of experimental music has appeared. The musical forms, which de-territorialize and exuviate the identity of traditional music, are re-territorializing the identity of Korean traditional music. It is also found that the hybridization has occurred in peripheries rather than in core part of the Korean traditional music genre, as it were the places in-between the boundary.
