영화 <배트맨, 1989>의 음악분석을 통한 대니 앨프만(Danny Elfman)의 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 할리우드에서 활발히 활동 중인 영화음악 작곡가 대니 앨프만(Danny Elfman, 1958 ~)이 작곡을 담당한 영화 <배트맨 (Batman, 1989)>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 대니 앨프만은 현재 할리우드에서 99편의 많은 영화들의 오리지널 스코어들을 완성시켜 명성을 쌓아왔고 다양한 음악장르를 활용하여 전통 오케스트라 편성에 다양한 장르를 통합시켜 음악적 스타일로 확립한 창의적인 작곡가 이다. 코믹 북으로부터 만들어진 슈퍼히어로 영화 <배트맨>은 대니 앨프만의 첫 슈퍼히어로 작품으로 보편적인 슈퍼히어로 영화음악에는 없는 고딕함과 다양한 음악 장르와 분위기에 음악을 연출하여 대니 앨프만의 명성을 얻게 된 작품이다. 대니 앨프만의 첫 슈퍼히어로 작품인 <배트맨>의 음악분석을 통하여 작품의 음악적 특징과 감독의 연출의도를 파악하여 등장인물들의 상황, 내적 심리상태와 영상의 분위기를 음악을 통해 어떻게 영상으로 나타내고 있는지 음악과의 상관관계를 연구하였다. 연구의 첫 단계로, 영화 <배트맨>이 코믹 북에서 기반이 된 슈퍼히어로를 바탕으로 한 작품인 점을 생각하여 코믹 북 영화들의 변천사를 살펴보았다. 또한 대니 앨프만의 생애와 작품세계를 조사하여 그의 음악관과 음악사적 위치를 알아보고자 살펴보았다. 연구방법으로 작품의 스토리를 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말의 부분으로 나누어 줄거리를 요약하고 스토리의 전개 순으로 음악의 인 앤 아웃을 파악하여 큐시트를 작성하였다. 장면에 따른 음악이 영상과의 상관관계를 연구하였고 팀 버튼 감독의 연출의도가 작품 속에서 음악적 특징으로 잘 반영되었는지 분석하였다. 연구 결과 <배트맨>에서 나타나는 대니 앨프만의 음악은 주요 캐릭터들을 상징하는 테마 음악을 반복적으로 사용하고 발전하여 작품 전체에 내포되어 분위기를 만들어 사용했음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 장면에 따른 분위기의 음악을 사용하여 영상과 음악의 호흡을 연출하였는데 특히 승리와 패배, 캐릭터들의 내적 심리상태를 음악으로 표현하여 영상의 흐름에 효과적인 역할을 하였다. 본 논문의 연구를 통하여 대니 앨프만의 다른 작품들을 연구하는 이들에게 도움이 되기를 기대해본다.;This study aims to discuss the musical characteristics of <Batman,1989>, a film whose music was composed by Danny Elfman (1958~ ) who is a film music composer actively engaging in Hollywood. Danny Elfman has gained his reputation by completing original scores of 99 Hollywood films. He is a creative composer who used various musical genres to establish his musical style by integrating various genres with traditional orchestra. <Batman>, a superhero movie with its origin from the comic book, is Danny Elfman’s first superhero work where he became reputable by presenting gothic mood, which is hard to be heard in general superhero film music, along with various genres and mood. By analyzing the music of <Batman>, Danny Elfman’s first superhero work, this study sought to identify the musical characteristics of the work and the intention of the director in order to discuss the correlation between the music and how the circumstances and internal mental state of the characters as well as the mood of the video are presented through the film. As the first step, this study discusses the history of comic book films, considering the fact that the film <Batman> is based on superheroes from a comic book. Also, it studied the life and the works of Danny Elfman in order to understand his musical values and his status in the music history. As the study method, a cue sheet was devised by summarizing the plot of the story into exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution, and then studying the in and out of music along the storyline. The study discusses the correlation between the music at each scene and the video, and analyzes whether the intention of Director Tim Burton was well reflected through the musical characteristics in the work. The study result showed that Danny Elfman’s music shown in <Batman> repetitively uses and develops theme music that symbolize main characters, internalizing it throughout the film to create pertaining moods. Also, music according to the mood of each scene was used to present the pace between music and video. Notably, victory, defeat, and internal mental state of the characters were expressed into music, playing an effective role for flow of the film. I hope this study would be able to provide assistance for those who study other works of Danny Elfman.
