Abstract

1. Introduction • Purpose: This textbook is intended to give Korean students opportunities to read authentic English books who scarcely have chances to read the whole book in their English curriculum and mostly practice intensive reading through analyzing short excerpts. • Rationale: Having no textbook published addressing authentic books for EFL students, this textbook fills the niche to give guidance to students to read authentic English books and learn English simultaneously. By doing engaging and meaningful activities through the lessons, students will be sharpening up four skills of English fluency and broadening their cultural horizons as well as critical thinking. • Target Learners: Small group of 3rd grade elementary school students (approximately 10), mixed gender • Proficiency Level: Intermediate-High according to ACTFL • Learning Context: Private lessons, 2 times a week for 90 minutes each 2. Method • Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) • Theme-Based Instruction (TBI) • Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) • Extensive Reading (ER) • Intensive Reading (IR) • Students will complete reading assignment at home and teachers will plan activities based on the reading. 3. Expected Outcomes • Students will gain a deeper understanding of the book. • Students will discover the enjoyment of reading. • Students will expand further reading on Arthur Adventure Series. • Students will be familiar with the target vocabulary recycled in different activities. • Students will develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through meaningful and interactive activities.
