Abstract
This thesis analyzes the disquieting sense of sorrow in Toni Morrison’s God Help the Child (2015) with the psychoanalytical concepts of melancholia and incorporation. Although Bride, the female protagonist, leads a seemingly successful and satisfactory life in contemporary America even with her “blue-black” skin, she cannot help feeling empty and sad. Her lover Booker also suffers from the sense of incompleteness, having lost his beloved brother as a child. Taking this sense of sorrow as a point of departure, this thesis analyzes melancholia as a symptom of the pain of loss—as a pathology viscerally suffered by an individual, precisely to examine, ultimately, the vulnerability of specific groups of people to social oppression: that of African Americans and children. Owing to the recentness of the novel’s publication, not many critical analyses have been published on the novel. Scholarly attempts to connect Freud’s concept of melancholia with the racial dynamics in the US have previously been made, with scholars such as Anne Anlin Cheng or David L. Eng and Shinhee Han introducing the concept of racial melancholia. However, in their implementation of the notion of melancholia, only the logic of melancholic internalization is employed as a framework for the mechanism of racialization in America. Thus, their approach is not sufficient for discussing Morrison’s latest novel which focuses on the actual loss of a beloved object as a source of melancholia. By closely following the reasons and symptoms of melancholia in Bride and Booker, this thesis examines racism and child abuse, the subtle and yet deep-rooted sources of pain. Central to the notion of melancholia in God Help the Child is its association with secrecy. I adopt Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok’s conceptualization of introjection and incorporation that supplements and develops that of Freud’s mourning and melancholia, in order to diagnose the melancholia of Bride and Booker. According to Abraham and Torok, the prohibition on communicating one’s loss hinders one’s process of mourning and causes one to incorporate the lost love-object, leading the person to melancholia. Racial shaming, internalization of shame, and traumatization play a central role in leading Bride to melancholia as she incorporates her own childhood self that is “unlovable.” For Booker, the loss of his beloved brother Adam causes melancholia. The discrepancy between his desire to mourn Adam in an individualized manner collides with that of his family who wants to forget, and with the public which interferes with Booker’s attempt to privatize the mourning, making Booker incorporate, instead of properly mourn and introject, the dead brother. While melancholia issues from a loss of a beloved object that leaves the subject psychically wounded, Morrison suggests through the novel that it is at the same time via the interaction and love between wounded and traumatized individuals that melancholia can be cured. The ultimate solution Morrison suggests for melancholia is love, and she proposes interactions between the psychically wounded individuals as a way to be able to love, or to be open to changes and otherness. Bride’s relationship with Rain, Queen, and Booker helps her mourn the incorporated Lula Ann, her childhood self. Booker’s relationship with Queen and Bride also assists his healing of melancholia, as he and Bride participate in the communal process of actively making amendment with the past through acts of devotion for the dying Queen.;본 논문은 토니 모리슨(Toni Morrison)의 최신작 『신이여 그 아이를 도우소서(God Help the Child)』(2015) 속 등장인물들의 정신적 고통을 정신분석학적 개념인 멜랑콜리아(melancholia)를 적용하여 분석함으로써, 이들의 멜랑콜리아를 불러일으키는 원인이 여전히 미국 사회에 영향을 미치는 인종차별과 아동학대에 있음을 분석하고자 한다.
