헬렌 프랑켄탈러 회화의 조형적 특성을 응용한 패션디자인 연구

Abstract

현대 사회의 발전은 최첨단의 정보화된 사회로 발전하고 있고 정확하고 빠르게 제품의 대량생산이 가능해지면서 수요 이상의 공급이 이루어지는 물질적인 풍요를 가져왔다. 그러나 이러한 발전에도 불구하고 인간의 감정적 욕구까지 충족시킬 수는 없었으며 자연으로의 회귀, 예술로서의 가치, 감성에 관한 마케팅 등이 중요한 요소로 대두되고 있는 것이 오늘날의 추세이다. 특히 패션디자인 분야는 예술과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 그 중 회화가 표현되는 방식과 추구하는 바는 패션디자이너들에게 다양한 모티프를 제공하고 시각적으로 이미지를 재구성함으로써 새로운 패션디자인으로 탄생하고 있다. 또한 회화에서 나타나는 선, 형태, 색채의 조형적 특징은 패션디자인의 다양한 발상의 원천이 되어왔다. 이에 본 연구는 헬렌 프랑켄탈러 회화 중에서 패션디자인의 도입요소가 많은 1950년대 이후 회화작품을 모티프로 선택하여 작품에 응용하고자 한다. 헬렌 프랑켄탈러의 회화는 자유곡선의 드로잉, 모호하고 형식에 얽매이지 않은 자유로운 형태, 강렬한 색채로 이루어져 있어 디자인의 모티프 활용에 용이하고 이러한 요소는 자유로운 표현기법으로 적합한 조건을 갖추고 있다. 헬렌 프랑켄탈러의 회화가 지닌 평평한 표면감을 나타내기 위해 전통 펠트기법인 펠팅 (Felting)기법을 사용하고자 한다. 펠팅기법으로 만들어진 펠트원단은 만드는 과정에서 다양한 색상의 양모로 다채로운 재질감과 양모가 놓이는 모양에 따라 회화적인 표현이 가능하다는 강점을 이용하여 헬렌 프랑켄탈러의 자유로운 드로잉 표현을 하고자 한다. 색채로는 주로 자연에서 영감을 받아 작업했던 프랑켄탈러의 회화를 표현하기 위해 밝고 원색적인 색채를 선택하고자 한다. 이를 통해 모티프의 미적 감각을 극대화 시킬 수 있는 심플한 실루엣으로 의상 디자인을 제작하고자 한다. 본 연구의 목적은 프랑켄탈러의 회화에 나타난 형태와 색채를 재구성하고 프랑켄탈러의 독특한 색채표현기법을 펠팅기법으로 활용하여 현대 패션디자인의 표현영역을 확대함에 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구의 내용 및 방법은 단행본, 각종 문헌자료와 인터넷 자료검색을 통하여 헬렌 프랑켄탈러 회화작품의 조형적 특성을 알아본 후 조형성을 선과면, 색채로 분석하고 그 특성을 모티프로 적용하고자 한다. 프랑켄탈러 작품의 특징인 색면추상회화를 응용한 현대 패션사례를 디자이너별로 살펴본다. 펠팅기법의 정의와 특성을 알아보고 제작방법에 대해 조사한다. 펠팅기법의 표현기법을 바탕으로 한 현대 패션디자인의 관계를 컬렉션을 통해 알아본다. 이를 토대로 헬렌 프랑켄탈러의 자유곡선과 모호한 형태의 모티프를 재해석한 본 연구자의 디자인과 펠팅기법을 융합하여 6벌의 작품을 제작하고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 프랑켄탈러 회화에 나타난 내면세계를 작품에 도입함에 있어서 자연을 기반으로 한 낙서와 같은 유동적인 선, 큰 덩어리로 이루어진 면의 구성, 원색적인 색채의 조형성을 응용하여 단순하고 추상적인 상징적 이미지를 표출시킬 수 있었다. 둘째, 작품의 색채에 있어서는 프랑켄탈러 회화의 중심색채인 흰색, 빨강, 노랑, 파랑, 초록 등의 원색을 사용한 결과 강렬한 색상대비, 보색대비가 표출되어 프랑켄탈러 작품이 지닌 순수한 색채표현이 구현될 수 있었다. 셋째, 펠팅기법을 통해 원단을 만드는 작업과정이 캔버스에 물감을 스며들게 함으로써 바탕과 자연스러운 번짐 효과를 주는 작가의 대표적 표현기법인 착색기법(Staining Technique)을 표현하기에 용이함을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 프랑켄탈러의 평면적인 회화의 특징을 펠트와 가죽소재의 결합으로 평면성을 강조하고 여백의 미를 나타낼 수 있었다. 다섯째, 프랑켄탈러 회화작품의 풍부한 색채표현과 평면적인 화면구성을 통한 시각적 특성은 단순한 스타일의 의상에서 그 효과가 부각됨을 알 수 있었다. 본 연구는 프랑켄탈러 회화의 조형미를 패션디자인에 반영하는 모티프로 재해석하고자 하였으며 펠팅기법을 응용해 의상으로 제작하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 프랑켄탈러의 자유로운 선과 면의 표현, 강렬하고 순수한 원색의 형상 들이 현대 패션에 모티프로 영감을 주는 원천이 될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 앞으로 디자이너들의 다양한 모티프 구현과 회화작품을 통한 다양한 표현기법이 적용된 현대패션디자인이 지속적으로 연구되길 기대한다.;Modern society is being developed into a cutting-edge information-oriented society. As mass production has become more accurate and faster, material affluence has been achieved where supply exceeds demand. However, such development could not satisfy human emotional desire and, today, important marketing elements are returning to nature, value as work of art, emotional sense, etc. Particularly, the fashion design area is closely related to art. Of it, how paintings are expressed and what they seek provides dynamic motifs to fashion designers while restructuring images visually to create new fashion design. Moreover, the figurative feature of lines, forms and colors appearing in paintings have served as a source of diverse fashion design. In recognition of this, the study chooses as a motif some of the painting works of Helen Frankenthaler after the 1950s, which have plenty of fashion design elements, and applies them to design work. Helen Frankenthaler’s works consist of free-curved-line-based drawing, ambiguous and formality-free shapes and strong colors. So they are easily utilized as a design motif. Such elements also satisfy appropriate conditions as free expression technique. In order to deliver the sense of flat surface in Helen Frankenthaler’s works, felting technique, a traditional felt technique, is to be utilized in this study. Felt fabrics made with felting technique can express diverse textures with various-colored wool and, depending upon the shape of placing wool, can express pictorialization. Taking such advantages, the study seeks to make the free drawing expression in Helen Frankenthaler’s paintings. Bright and primary colors are selected to follow her color use inspired by nature. By doing so, the study aims to produce clothes design with simple silhouette capable of maximizing the aesthetic sense of the motif. The purpose of this study is to restructure the forms and colors in Frankenthaler’s paintings and utilize her unique color expression technique in a felting technique to help expand the expressive area of modern fashion design. Based on literature review such as books, texts and internet data, the figurative feature of her paintings was investigated. Then its formativeness was analyzed in terms of line, side, and color. Their characteristics will be utilized as a motif. Frankenthaler’s works are characterized as color-field abstract painting. The study looks at each designer for their cases of Frankenthaler work application. The definition and characteristics of felting technique are investigated and manufacturing method is studied. The relationship between the felting expression technique and modern fashion design is examined by looking at fashion collections. Based on the research, Helen Frankenthaler’s free-curved lines and ambiguously-formed motif is reinterpreted in this study design; and the design is combined with the felting technique to present 6 design works. The study found as follows; First, in introducing the inner world of Helen Frankenthaler’s works to design, simple but abstract and symbolic images could be expressed by applying the nature-inspired scribble-like flexible lines, face composition consisting of large chunks and primary color formativeness. Second, with regards to colors, Frankenthaler’s major colors of white, red, yellow, blue and green were utilized. As a result, strong color contrast, complementary color contrast was expressed to realize the pure color expression of Frankenthaler works. Third, the felting technique helped colors permeate into the canvas in the fabric production process, appropriately to express the artist’s signature expression method of staining which makes natural color spreading in the background. Forth, by combining the flat dimensional characteristic of Frankenthaler’s paintings with felt and leather materials, flatness was emphasized while expressing the beauty of empty space. Fifth, it was found that the visual characteristics of her works such as rich color expression and flat dimensional screen composition were more effectively emphasized in simple-style clothes. The study sought to reinterpret the formative aesthetic of Frankenthaler’s paintings in fashion design motif and apply the felting technique to make it in clothing. As a result, it was found that Frankenthaler’s free line and face expression and strong and pure primary color use could be a source of inspirational motif to modern fashion. It is expected that study will continue on modern fashion design by realizing dynamic motifs for designers and applying diversified expressive techniques in painting works.
