The purpose of this study is to examine the multiple identities of young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women, to understand the pattern of the formation of such multiple identities among the children, and to explore the factors that affect multiple identities, in order to explore social support strategies for helping them establish desirable multiple identities. The research questions, according to the purpose of this study, were as follows; 1. What were the multiple identities of the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women like? 2. What were the patterns of the formation of the multiple identities of the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women? 3. What are the factors that affected the formation of the multiple identities of the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women? 4. What would be the social support strategies to help the formation of desirable multiple identities among the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women? The participants of this study were from the five families who participated in ‘The Program Supporting Korean-Vietnamese Multicultural Families Visiting the Mother's Parents' Home’ in 2014 and 2015. In total, 5 Vietnamese marriage immigrant women, 4 husbands, 9 children, and 10 teachers participated in this study. The researcher used qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and participatory observations, to collect data. From March 2016 to November of the same year, the researcher had about six interviews with the mother, three interviews with the father, seven sessions of child observation and interviews, and one interview with the teacher, for each family. The data collected were organized, codified, categorized, read, and documented in memos to build categories in an inductive manner to reach the conclusion. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the multiple identities of the young children of the marriage immigrant women were composed of sub-elements such as self-identities, family identities, and national identities. The self-identities of the young children were 'a growing person,' 'a capable person,' 'a person who loves and is loved,' 'a person who is a member of a certain group', and 'a person who is different in some ways from his/her friends'. The family identities were analyzed to be 'people who share joy and happiness,' 'people who love and care,' 'people who use the Vietnamese and Korean languages,' and 'people who need to work on communication.' Lastly, their national identities were 'Korean,' 'Vietnamese' 'Vietnamese and Korean,' or 'Unknown.' The children were developing their national identity while forming a self and family identity. The children were, like many South Korean children, being loved by their families and growing healthily. The children recognized themselves as children of multi-cultural families, but this was not important for their self-understanding. However, there is a tendency in this society to pay attention to the multi-cultural background and national identity of the children from the families of marriage immigrant women. This society has to support the healthier development of the identities of these children by paying more attention to their self identities and family identities, in addition to the national identities based on their multi-cultural background. Second, the patterns of the formation of the multi-cultural identities of the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women were multi-culture, construction, variability, latency, and agency. The multiple identities of the children showed a tendency of multi-culture, inherently having two cultures from their mother and father, who are from different countries and cultures. However, the multi-cultural aspect was built and changed during the interactions with others. The multi-cultural aspect of the children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women was not obviously manifested normally, and the children could make a choice whether to reveal their multicultural backgrounds or use it as their advantage. Of such tendencies of multiple identities, the multi-culture is a result of interpretation in the perspective of the essentialism. In addition, the construction, variability, latency, and agency are results of interpretation in the anti-essentialistic perspectives. This means that the multiple identities of the children cannot be divided into variable ones and non-variable ones. That is, they cannot be understood in a dichotomous way. The fact that they are from a multi-cultural family does not change. However, the multiple identities which are formed on this basis differ from individual to individual, and may vary even within the same individual. It is necessary to provide these children with appropriate education and support so that they can develop more desirable multiple-identities. Third, the multiple identities of the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women were affected by various factors. The factors that affected the multiple identities of the children included the character of the children and the development of the children as their personal factors, their relationship with the mothers, family education, adaptation of the mother to the marriage immigration life, interactions with the family of the mother, and the attitude of the family members on the father’s side toward Vietnam, as the family factors, and the multi-cultural education in the educational institutions and the attitudes of the friends as the social factors. These results showed that the multi-cultural background factors were not meaningful in themselves, but they began to have meanings after being affected by many factors in various circumstances. If the factors that affected the multiple identities are developed in a way that helps the children to grow healthily, it is possible that their multiple identities may change and develop in a positive manner. Fourth, the parents and the teachers said social supports are necessary to help the young children of Vietnamese marriage immigrant women form desirable identities. They expressed concerns about the difficulties their children may expect to face as children from multi-cultural families and they also expressed hope that social awareness on the issue could improve. Also, they needed education for the children and the parents, while saying multi-cultural education for children in general is also needed. In this respect, specific strategies to improve the social awareness included 'viewing the family of marriage immigrant women as normal Koreans,' 'refraining from showing too much interest in the multi-cultural background of the children,' 'recognizing the multi-cultural background as an advantage for the children,' and 'learning about the culture of the home countries of the marriage immigrant women.' There were demands for education for the children and the parents, too. The education programs for the children included education on the language and culture of the mother's country and basic learning abiliy, while the education programs for the parents included education on Korean culture for the mothers and education for the fathers to improve their attitudes and awareness toward their wives. Also, there were demands for multi-cultural education by educational institutions for the children in general. The children and the parents hoped for an improvement in social awareness, education for the children and parents of multi-cultural families, and education for the general public, which may be conducted in coordination, to improve the society's view on multi-cultural families and enhance the integrity and diversity of the society, to make it a more mature multi-cultural society. In this study, the researchers reviewed the identities of the young children of the marriage immigrant women. The children were developing their identities in a healthy manner but also having difficulties due to their multi-cultural identities. The multiple identities of the children could be changed, and such changes were led by various personal, family, and social factors. The parents and the teachers demanded that, in order to develop desirable identities, multi-faceted education efforts for the children, families, and non-multi-cultural children would be necessary. It is the hope of the researcher that, in the future, more in-depth studies and support concerning the identities of the children from the families of marriage immigrant women will be implemented in order to help them to become healthy members of society.-
