Abstract
The whole world uses English as a common language as a means of communication and as an international language for exchange with various people. In the place where such English is used, about 85% of the 13,000 international organizations uses English as a formal language, 99% of the world popular music groups are using English, and 80% of the information stored on the computer and 85% of web pages are in English by Crystal (1997) and Graddol (1997). As such, the global influence of English is so strong that there is the need to find the right method of English education to facilitate communication. Coady and Huckin (1997) argue that vocabulary competence plays a key role in ensuring accurate and fluent communication. Miller and Fellbaum (1991) also assert that a systematic, vast amount of vocabulary is required for free communication. “The 7th Curriculum suggested the number of vocabulary to be taught by grade level, but vocabulary learning leaves to teachers and students’direction since the standard of concrete teaching method and system is insufficient”(Kim & Moon, 2004). This is limited to the goal of the curriculum to “teach the ability to communicate successfully in English” and a plan should be prepared to effectively teach vocabulary learning. Recently, e-Learning and m-Learning centered on the Internet and mobile devices have been introduced to the educational world with the development of information communication and scientific technique (Keegan, 2002; Kukulska-Hume & Traxler, 2005). Since the late 2000s, table PCs, smart TVs and smart-phones have become popular and learning materials using them have been increasing. So learning contents can be provided in the presence of WiFi regardless of time or place (Lei, Wan & Man, 2013). Such usefulness has facilitated language learning and is considered a potential educational field. A typical example is the smart-phone. Chu (2011) explained that the smart-phone has differentiated hardware and software from existing mobile devices. In other words, application market of smart-phone, which is called small computer in hand, is continuously launching diverse applications, and it receives great attention from many teachers and learners who want to learn foreign language (Jo, 2009). This is supported by the fact that the proportion of English learning applications is very high (Jeong & Kim, 2013). Elementary English curriculum is highly dependent on visual materials (Kim, E.-J., 2012) since elementary school learners are deeply involved in sensory thoughts and behaviors experienced in real life. And the children learn easily but forget easily, and their concentration cannot last long. Generally the concentration time of children is thought to be “age + 1 minute”(Jeong, 2009). Considering the characteristics of these learners, the English education and learning method should be learning happily and actively based on experience education that can be experienced directly, and it is effective to have a new experience through sensory or play activities. We conducted English learning with smart-phone game applications as part of the development of information and communication. Since the game applications are an educational media that gives learners pleasure in the learning process inducing motivation and strengthening learners’ concentration, we chose those applications as an experimental tool. This study investigates the learning effect and attitude of vocabulary learning using on the one hand, the typical learning method used in elementary school class for Korean elementary learners and on the other hand, the smart-phone game applications, which is one of the mobile devices. Among the total of 57 students in the 5th grade of National Elementary School located in Namyangju, Gyeonggi-do, 28 experimental groups and 29 control groups were selected randomly. Verification for homogeneity of the two groups was conducted with pre-evaluation for the experiment. A preliminary evaluation and pre-basic survey were conducted in the 1st session to select experimental vocabulary, preliminary evaluation and pre-survey were conducted in the 2nd session and vocabulary lessons were given for each experimental group and control group in the 3rd to the 5th session. The 6th session was followed by post-survey and post-evaluation. Finally, in the experiment, all lessons were completed in the 7th session and delay test was performed one week later. Each materials are composed of preliminary vocabulary test, vocabulary lists, dictionary, post-vocabulary test and survey, activity sheet of smart-phone game application “WORDY BUDDY”and Cross puzzle, learning handout, delayed vocabulary test and statistical tools for measuring results. The results based on this experiment are summarized as follows: First, both the experimental group and the control group showed an increase in the total score, the comprehension and the expressiveness score from the preliminary/post-test, meaning both groups had a short term effect. The results of the analysis based on the preliminary survey suggest that the existing learners had effect in vocabulary learning since they had less absolute time to learn vocabulary directly in the classroom and private tutoring. However, it was not possible to accurately determine whether the smart-phone game application had a more positive effect on the vocabulary learning through the comparison of post-test scores only. So both were positive and effective since the p value was significant. According to the analysis of pre-test and post-test score based on the proficiency of both groups, experimental group of the upper group for proficiency showed significant results with the lower p value of the significant probability .05 except for expressiveness item. Therefore, it can be concluded that all except the expressiveness of the upper group who learns English vocabulary by using smart-phone game applications influence the short-term memory. For subgroup of proficiency, it was positive for short-term memory as above since all p value were less than .05 except for expressiveness of experimental and control group. Second, the effects of the experimental group and control group on the long-term vocabulary learning were not significant. But the average score in the delay test for both groups was slightly increased by about one point, so it was helpful for long-term memory. In detail, the comprehensive ability and expressiveness of both groups can be compared. The results showed that the expressiveness item of experimental group was statistically significant and helped the long-term memory of the vocabulary. There was also no difference in the analysis of the delayed results on the proficiency of both groups. Third, in respect to the affective aspects of the experimental and control group, the item of interests, usefulness and confidence were significant and positive relatively for upper level of experimental and lower level of control group, upper and lower group and both upper/lower group. According to the results of open survey conducted after all the lessons, the vocabulary learning using direct examples and pictures by acquiring absolute learning time for both groups was helpful. They felt that they needed to focus on vocabulary learning itself since they had not enough time to learn vocabulary in the past. Also, the game attracted interest and motivated vocabulary learning. However, boy and girl learners who were not familiar with the game found that they are embarrassed about the game and forgot the learned vocabulary and it did not have a positive effect on confidence. Also, they found that when they focused on smart-phones, their eyes were aching and they were uncomfortable because of the high battery consumption during the game. Other comments suggested that a game which allows the character to diversify and repeat the wrong words is necessary. The reason for these comments was that this game application is assigned to 24 words per unit and has no function to repeat wrong words even though the whole learning can be done without limiting the number of play. And there are only two characters, rabbit for girl and an ax for boy. Girl learners wanted to set up cute and diverse characters so that they can actively play the game. The common answers of the two groups are as follows: first, they felt the necessity of vocabulary learning after all the experimental lessons, saying that they would study vocabulary harder for not knowing the word correctly. Second, they said that the vocabulary was better understood when appropriate pictures and illustrating were presented with examples. Finally, they hoped that the direct vocabulary learning time can be assigned in the class to learn the vocabulary naturally by planning the vocabulary learning such as listening to pop songs, which is an implicit learning method. Therefore, teachers conduct the class by using visual materials that can provide enjoyment such as various multimedia materials and information and communication technology (ITC) in consideration of the learner’s proficiency and interests in English. For example, learners can learn vocabulary using games or pictures that can be interesting for a certain amount of time. Since there is no official evaluation in elementary school, teachers should be careful not to overload the learner in solving the exercises such as experimental activities after class. It is also desirable to give some snacks or stickers to expect learners to be rewarded in order to increase their active participation and concentration. However, this should be taken into consideration in a situation that is flexible enough not to interfere with the level.
