Abstract
In spite of the increasing number of Indonesian students who learn Korean, research on the complaint speech act on Indonesian Korean-language learner have been still rarely considered. Since complaining is a face-threatening act directed towards hearer, the inappropriate use of complaining expression can be potentially caused miss-understanding between the speaker and hearer. The purpose of this study is to analyze the realization patterns in complaint speech act of Indonesian Korean-language learners with advanced Korean proficiency. It focuses on comparative study of cross-cultural pragmatics concerning the speech act of complaining performed by Korean Native Speakers (KNS), Indonesian Native Speakers (INS), and Indonesian Korean-language Learners (IKL). To collect their strategies and expressions in complaining, they were asked to fill out a written Discourse Completion Test (DCT), consists of 12 situational conditions according to three variables. The variables are related to private/public situation, social distance, and power. The organization of this study is as follows. In chapter Ⅰ, the purpose of this study, literature review, and research questions will be described. By the reference of previous studies, there are two main research questions in this study. The first research question is to analyze if there is any difference between complaining speech act realization patterns of three groups according to private/public situations, social distance, and power. The second research question aims to see whether the terms of address used by Indonesian Korean-language learners group in the complaint speech act has a function as a mitigating expression. In chapter Ⅱ, the literature review on the complaint speech act and cross-cultural pragmatics will be explained. In chapter Ⅲ, the methodology of this study will be presented, including the research procedures, participants, data collection methods and tools, and data analysis. The analysis of this study according to each research questions will be explained in chapter Ⅳ and the conclusion of the study will be placed in chapter Ⅴ. Regarding the first research question, the level of dissatisfaction towards the situation was not related to the chosen responses. The three groups have a similarity in using strategies of complaining, which almost in every situation they tended to use indirect strategies. However, their chosen indirect strategy was slightly different. The Indonesian Korean-language learners group used some strategies similar to the strategies used by Korean native speakers group in almost all situations. The used expressions were also closer to Korean native speakers group than to Indonesian native speakers group. This result might be affected by the subject of this study who are Indonesian Advanced Korean learners in Korea. In the situation where the hearers were familiar to the speakers, all three groups tended to use the direct strategy but Indonesian Korean-language learners used more indirect contents than the other two groups. Therefore, in Korean language education for Indonesian, the teaching on using proper direct expressions in complaining is required. Regarding the second research question, most terms of address used by Indonesian Korean-language learners have a function as a mitigating expression, especially in the public situation when the hearer has more power and not close to speaker. In some cases, Indonesian Korean-language learners used the terms of address to minimize the hearer's face-threatening but it does not fit the Korean social and cultural contexts. Therefore, it is necessary to develop teaching method in using Korean terms of address based on Korean social and cultural contexts for Indonesian Korean-language learners, particularly in mitigating the impact of complaints.
