Impact of Toilets on Girl’s Education in Nepal

Abstract

In this world today, 2.5 billion people still lack access to toilets. That is more than one in every three people. In additional to other problems, this is also causing a negative effect on education in developing countries. However, although toilets are imperative to all humans it is a subject that is not discussed openly. In many parts of the world it’s not as easy as raising your hand and asking to go to the toilet. Girls, in particular, at adolescent ages, do not go to school or end up dropping out because of a lack of privacy and the unavailability of a comfortable toilet. Despite recent educational reforms in Nepal, there is still the issue of girls’ participation rates in schools. This paper examines how the current conditions of toilets in the country influence the girls’ willingness to go to school, and how the problem has been addressed so far. I will also provide some prescription for further research in my conclusion. Key Words: Toilet, girls, education, Nepal, menstruation, taboo, development, Sustainable Development Goals;현재 세계에서는 25억명에 달하는 사람들이 화장실이 제대로 갖춰져 있지 않은 환경에서 살고 있다. 비율로 따지면 세명 중 한명이다. 이 문제는 개발도상국 교육에 안 좋은 영향을 미치고 있다. 하지만 이렇게 문제가 널리 퍼져 있음에도 불구하고, 현황과 해법에 대한 개방적인 토론이 이루어지고 있지 않다. 특히, 개발도상국의 사춘기 나이의 여자 아이들은 마음 편하게 용무를 볼 곳이 없어 학교를 가지 않거나 중퇴를 선택하는 경우가 빈번하다. 네팔의 경우, 최근 교육 개혁이 행해 졌음에도 남존여비 사상이나 미성년자에 대한 인권의식 부족이 더해져 여자 아이들의 출석률이 상대적으로 매우 낮은 편이다. 본 논문은 네팔을 특정해 화장실의 위생상태가 여자 아이들의 학교 출석률에 어떤 영향을 미치는지, 그리고 현재까지 어떠한 대책들이 세워졌고 그 결과는 어떠하였는지 탐구할 것이다. 또한 이 문제에 대한 저자의 해결책과 향후 연구방향도 결론 부분에 제시해보고자 한다.
