Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify the genre-specific writing characteristics through analysis of the writing results and processes of two different genres written by the native Korean speakers and Chinese Korean language learners which are argumentative essays and data commentaries, in order to enhance improvement in Korean writing skills of Chinese Korean language learners. Despite the fact that writing for academic purposes is very important for the Korean language learners, in reality it is hard to identify which area and to which degree they are having problems so that even the advanced students have difficulty preparing for dissertations. Thereupon, this study reviews the writing characteristics by different genres written by the Chinese Korean language learners through a comparative analysis on the writing results and writing processes of the native Korean speakers and Chinese Korean language learners in two of the traditional sub-genres in academic Korean writing which are argumentative essays and data commentaries. This study focuses on the writer’s stance and voice features in comparing the usage between the two groups. This study has adopted the mixed method of using both the qualitative and quantitative methods in analyzing the writing results and writing processes of the participants, which is based on the judgment that using both methods would be more appropriate in identifying the writing characteristics of the Chinese Korean language learners. Particularly, parallel use of quantitative and qualitative analyses on the writing results as well as observing the process of the completion of participants’ writing process have never been attempted in Korean language education, which is significant in the aspect of data collection. For the participants of this study, the selective members of the academic discourse communities in graduate schools or higher were recruited, among which 10 were native Korean speakers and the other 10 being Chinese Korean language learners. The participants conducted the writing tasks in both genres of argumentative essays and data commentaries, and the entire process of the participants’ writing with the word processor was video-captured for observation. Also, the writing results were analytically scored by the writing specialists based on their contents, structure, sentence structure and writing style, vocabulary and orthography. In the comparison of the groups on the analysis frames of this study which are the writer’s stance and voice, the qualitative difference was more significant than the quantitative difference. Firstly, Korean language learners showed more than twice the frequency than the native Korean speakers of using boosters in the argumentative essays. Meanwhile, the native Korean speakers showed tendency of using more colloquial style than literary style as well as the vocabularies with more general purposes than academic purposes. Korean language learners also used more directives in argumentative essays than the native Korean speakers, which was found to be affected by the language conventions among the Chinese Korean language learners. Although the groups showed no statistically significant difference in the data commentaries, hedges were found in various aspects. The difference between the argumentative essays and the data commentaries was also confirmed in that not many codes in data commentaries genre that come under assumption/guess category were found. Also, due to ‘most’ being recognized as a Chinese word by the Chinese Korean language learners and perceived as a formal and a literary style expression, it had a high usage frequency in the data commentaries, which confirms the fact that the writing style is influenced by their thought process based on Chinese writing conventions. In comparison of frequency of attitude markers between the argumentative essays and the data commentaries, the frequency was found higher in the argumentative essays, which is due to higher frequency of attitude markers in the argumentative essays than in the data commentaries for more than two times. The writer’s voice was also found more frequently in the argumentative essays and such difference is considered to result from the frequency of shared knowledge being higher in the argumentative essays. With regards to the individual expressions that appear, there is a difference in the expressions seen mostly in the argumentative essays and in the data commentaries. It was found that the boosters under the degree code appears more in the data commentaries while the argumentative essays incorporated a variety of expressions that fall under the restrict code as well as degree expressions. The attitude markers were significantly found more in the argumentative essays for its nature of illustrating the writer’s emotion. The individual review of the sentences with key opinions in the writings of the participants revealed that the participants tend to use hedges more frequently when showing their own opinions. Also, when comparing the sentences in which the key opinions of the highest 3 writers and the lowest 3 writers based on the writing specialist score are expressed, the native Korean speakers tend to use hedges to improve the validity of their opinion whereas the Chinese students with academic purposes use the same to add more speculation. When compared by the number of sentences, performance hours, number of performance units in the writing process of the participants in this study, Korean language learners showed higher averages in all categories. It was also found that the lesser number of sentences and the lesser number of performance units are related to higher overall scores. When reviewed by the writing evaluation specialists of the writing results, it was found that the score gap between the Korean native speakers and the Chinese Korean language learners was shown to be the bigger in sentence structure, style of writing, vocabulary and orthography rather than in the contents or structure of the writing. In the comparison between the groups in terms of the actual expression of the writer’s stance and voice, it was found that the participants who acquired higher scores in the specialists’ review of this study tend to focus more on finding better expressions before and after the use of writer’s stance and features whereas the Chinese Korean language learners tend to concentrate more on the minor correction. This study has its significance in the fact that it is an attempt at analyzing the characteristics of Korean writing styles for Korean language learning purposes with the use of both quantitative analyses and qualitative analyses. Also, it has confirmed there is a significant difference in the writing results and processes between native Korean speakers and Korean language learners. However, this study is limited to an analysis on an extremely small portion of the collected data under the limited frame. Further, this study has failed to analyze the writer’s stance and voice in more depth as the analysis is targeted on the short writings. This study has analyzed the writing process based on the start and end of a writing, which bears the limitation in accurately analyzing the thought process of writing. It will be considerable to conduct an analysis on the results of longer writings with the help of devices that allow more close observation on the writing process such as think aloud or eye-tracking in future studies, which will allow full scale analyses on more various characteristics of writings with learning purposes.
