Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine how student teaching experience of pre-service middle school music teachers effect on their pedagogical content knowledge (PCK, hereinafter) and beliefs of music education, and thus suggest educational implications. To this purpose, a one-group pretest protest survey was conducted, and it targeted fifty four Pre-service middle school music teachers who underwent student teaching experience. With regard to research instruments, the PCK perception tool developed and validated by Grossman (1990), and The music belief questionnaire (MBQ) of Austin and Reinhardt (1999) were used along with the sociodemographic questionnaires. SPSS version 19.0 was used in order to analyze the collected data. As for the methodologies, paired t-test and correlation analysis were applied in order to figure change in PCK and beliefs of music education, and their association respectively. Statistical significance of each hypothesis was observed when its p-value is less than .05, .01, or .001. The major results are as follows: First, the participants’ perception of PCK was significantly changed before and after the student teaching experience (t=-3.260, p<.01). Amongst the components of PCK, knowledge of specific contexts showed the highest rate, followed by knowldeges of specific contexts, content knowledge, and knowledge of learners and learning. Second, the study participants’ level of beliefs of music education was significantly changed before and after the student teaching experience (t=-3.211, p<.01). Specifically, aesthetic efficacy showed the highest level of expectancy, followed by socioemotional efficacy and quality of life efficacy. Third, positive correlation was reported between PCK and beliefs of music education, and its coefficient was statistically significant (r=.513, p<.001). According to the research results, student teaching experience tends to impact on both of PCK and beliefs of music education. Besides, these two variables are correlated each other, addressing that Pre-service middle school music teachers’ PCK is likely to be impacted by their beliefs of music education. The results of the current study lead to some implications. First, besides teaching experience, more curricular for field experience such as class visit or demonstration are highly recommended in order to improve pre-service middle school music teachers’understanding on learners. Second, supports from practice schools are needed when it comes to guiding pre-service music teachers’ beliefs of music education. A proper beliefs of music education is particularly essential as it plays a motivational role for high quality class, and in turn leads to a positive change in PCK. Last, besides the cooperation of practice schools, the direct supervisors are also required to take systematic training.
