Abstract
The author of this study usually finds and looks for other shapes in the form of surrounding things, such as objects or plants. Also, the discovered shapes appear in the author’s works as well. The works contained in this study started from what seemed to be a head of a person who is making a "silent appearance" of the juniper trees around the author’s grandmother's tomb. From then on, the author concentrated on finding human figures from trees on the road. Moreover, the author was wondering why she attempted to find 'the image of human beings' in 'trees'. In chapter Ⅱ, the study explored formatively applied projection. It first examined the concept of Apophenia (Paridollia) to relate two different things so that the author could explain her own acts to associate trees with human beings. Furthermore, it was through Jung's ‘Synchronicity' that it is not coincidence to connect two different objects but has unique implications. The unconsciousness, the situation, and the tendency of oneself can be projected on the peripheral object having similar characters. In order to contemplate more deeply about the act of projecting herself on the tree, the author investigated the meanings of the projection by Jung: projecting oneself to an object implied that an individual could not recognize the core of his or her unconscious feelings (complex) so he or she see it as projected. This situation is so natural that any people can experience it. In addition, the author attempted to support this point that such projection as a human nature has been reflected to individual artworks, considering a variety of figurative works from the past to the present, regardless of the regions. In analytical psychology, Jung stated that people can discover the complex through the projection, and realizing this complexity enables the subject to achieve 'self-realization(Selbstverwirklichung)'. As the author produced the works, she became more aware of herself. As the author began to acknowledge herself, negative thoughts gradually disappeared and she felt that the posture of working changed with amusing attitude. In other words, it seemed that self-realization was naturally possible by acting like a process of self-recognition while repeating the work through projection. In Chapter III, the study tried to prove this experience through an analytical psychological approach. In this regard, the study tried to link the sequence of painting to the stage of self-realization by adopting , which was produced to teach the meditation process in Zen Buddhism. deals with projecting 'self' to an ox. Therefore, the process of searching for an ox is a process of searching for 'true self'. In this way, the process of self-realization through projection is revealed in the picture of , so the author examined the stage of self-realization as a part of the work that meets with the work in form and content. The author explained the process of self-realization through the projection based on the formatively applied projection and the projection based on in connection with the figurative composition of the works. The author tried to summarize the trend of the work by two themes, 'Tree as self-origin' and 'the integration of ego and self'. In the first theme, the author realized that she was projecting her unconsciousness on the tree, and she explained the works to the process of making consciousness unconscious. In the second theme, the author described the process of encountering 'self' in the unconscious. Unlike the 'ox' of , 'the self' was found as 'an imperfect self'. She realized that the process of 'healing' was required to solve this problem. She tried to explain that the outcome, the painting as a healing process, led to a natural process in which the author’s attitude toward works changed more amusingly than before. The author’s works changed with the change of her thoughts and psychology. It is significant to summarize the work process of such an emotional attitude based on the theory and to provide an opportunity to look back at oneself with a rational attitude. Moreover, at a time when the attitude toward work through self-realization changed little by little, the study can contribute to the questions for the author’s future artworks.
