Abstract
An individual, who exists in interaction with numerous others, feels various emotions while co-existing and conflicting with the others. These emotions consist of the mind's candid psychology shaped by disparity between the superficially manifested self and the hidden self deeper within, as well as the psychology of sensing inevitable relationships with the others through this candid gaze. Based on the author's interest in such phenomenon, this paper examines the psychological relationship between the community and its individual members, and explains this relationship within works in the context of theatricality. The aim of this study is to reach a concrete definition of such theatricality. The definition of theatricality began with discussions about the forms of works with a theatrical element. Previous discussions viewed theatrical elements as a mere subsidiary tool to help the delivery of the work's theme and thus, the so-called theatrical works were defined only by a narrow sense of its theatrical property. While some theatrical elements can also be found in the author's works, such narrow definition is insufficient to explain the more comprehensive "theatricality." Therefore, this paper seeks to explore theatricality in works from a new and broader perspective. The author's works present the following three themes of theatricality in stages: first, the gaze of the individual feeling the gaze of the others, second, the direction that underlines independent identity by restructuring urban places in a way that reveals relationships with the others, and lastly, temporal experience through sensibilities of the present. As an independent being that also belongs to a community, the individuals within a community exchange gazes with each other. In this process, the individual performs the role of a socialized self shaped to fit into the community. This socialized self is an altered manifestation of a viewpoint that regards self as the other, which is one of the two perspectives within the individual's mind that regards self both as the subject and as the other. This is the first element of theatricality in that there is the gaze as the main character and the gaze as the observer at the same time. Second, the restructured modern city focuses on the act of direction and begins with the spiritual yearning to escape from the insecurity of the other's gaze. This shifts the author's perspective from gazing the inner mind to gazing relationships with the others. Individuals in a community build their self depending on interactions with a single other or the others while working to harmonize with them. The author, through a certain way of direction, portrayed this mentality of individuals trying to assimilate themselves to a society of co-existence with the others. This can be dubbed the direction of spirit and speaks for the author's life itself. The third theatricality involves presenting the temporal nature of sharing a certain experience. While the root of this notion can be found in the existing concept of theatricality, it is also differentiated in terms of "phantasm." Phantasm calls for instantaneous senses derived from the unreality of unfamiliarity in familiar spaces restructured into new spaces. In this context, the third theatricality in the author's works involves playing out the exchanged gazes in terms of space, which then brings about senses of phantasm. In other words, there is the temporal nature of going back and forth between the reality and a new different world by presenting the individual's double gazes (as the subject and as the other) in a new space with a new dimension. This study discusses the method of embodying parts of reality in a new form, which is directly related to the author’s approach toward the others in this world. It is also a journey of finding answers to the question of "How and by what do I exist?" The inquiry into the themes of gaze and relationship as well as the forms of direction and temporal phantasm is meaningful in that it is an attempt to identify and shape the ultimate way of being.
