Abstract
Although the traditional teaching method most frequently used in school physical education is considerably effective in terms of the curriculum, this teaching method excessively emphasizes the development of the exercise function and makes students too dependent on teachers for competition strategy organization. Thus, the existing method of school physical education class has a limit to lead the holistic growth of students. Therefore, the student-centered physical education class is needed instead of teacher-centered classroom method for better physical education class. 'Flipped Learning' is a student-centered classroom that closely links pre-classes and classes in systematical ways, which is a new paradigm of education that reminds students of the nature of learning through communication between teachers and students. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to improve the possibility of application of 'Flipped Learning' in physical education class by examining the positive aspects and the difficult aspects of the teachers in the secondary school physical education class with 'Flipped Learning’. This study selected five teachers who have experienced ‘'Flipped Learning’ or have applied 'Flipped Learning’ in physical education class as research participants and conducted in-depth interviews with semi-structured questions. The in-depth interviews were conducted from early September 2016 to mid-October, and related literature was collected and analyzed. The data obtained from the in-depth interviews were categorized and classified by inductive category analysis based on interpretation. The results were as follows. The reason for applying ‘'Flipped Learning’ in the physical education class was to make better physical education class that can increase the learning time and stimulate the interest of students. In the middle school physical education class, the positive change of students after the application of ‘'Flipped Learning’ was observed. First, the actual learning time increased. Secondly, the students were more engaged in class than before. Third, girls' participation in classes has changed positively. Fourth, students became aware of how to operate sports as well as how to play sports. Fifth, the interaction between students and teachers was found to increase. Sixth, students who only thought of physical activities had a new perception about physical education subjects. Lastly, 'Flipped Learning’ became an opportunity to develop the potential of students. However, ‘Flipped Learning’ also had difficulties in its application. There was a lack of collaboration among teachers and problems in effective classroom planning that linked physical activity with prior learning tasks. In addition, the negative attitudes of the teachers were pointed out in trying new teaching models, and the students were burdened while presenting the pre-learning tasks in the physical education subjects which did not have tasks before. As an alternative to these difficulties, the government should recognize the educational values of 'Flipped Learning’ and positively encourage it to teachers. Also, in the future, it is suggested that ‘Flipped Learning’ application in the middle school physical education class actively can be actively explored to introduce it to the actual field with practical improvement plan.
