Abstract
Silicon is the most popular material for electronics devices. It is promising and widely used for radiation detectors. Therefore silicon has been applied to almost everywhere in science and engineering. One of prime examples is X-ray detection in astrophysics, especially in space applications. Silicon detectors have many advantages over other types of detectors because of their light weight, small volume, low power consumption, and mechanical and thermal robustness. Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) are extremely interesting phenomena in astrophysics, because they are the most powerful explosions in the universe, emitting all types of electromagnetic radiations and particles. They are occurred at far distance and only for a few tens of seconds, so the observation of GRBs requires large aperture telescopes for ultraviolet/optical/infrared detection and large area detectors for Gamma/X-rays, both equipped with high sensitive sensors. One of future space projects in progress is UFFO (Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory) led by my institute. Unlike previous missions, UFFO aims to measure the X-ray energy in broad band, i.e. 3 ~ 300 keV. Motivated by such a challenging project, I have developed silicon sensors both for detection of low and high energy X-rays from GRBs. For low energy X-ray detection, the novel silicon stripixel sensors have been designed and fabricated, where strips of comb shapes intertwine with neighbor strips of also comb shapes to act as pixels. Silicon stripixel sensors can detect X-rays of energy of 10 keV or less with nearly 100% efficiency. For high energy X-ray detection in space, the Silicon Photomultipliers are the first introduced in my thesis for detection of ultraviolet/optical generated from scintillating crystals. The Silicon Photomultipliers can replace conventional photomultipliers tubes, owing to their advantages in weight, volume, power consumption, and robustness, ideally suitable for space applications. I have designed and fabricated successfully these devices that are built with YSO crystals to convert X-rays to ultraviolet /optical for the detection of X-rays up to the energy of 300 keV. This thesis describes the details of these silicon sensors developments in-cluding the design, simulation, fabrication, and performance tests.;실리콘은 반도체 전자장치 개발에 있어 가장 인기 있는 소재로써 방사선 검출기로의 사용 가능성 또한 기대된다.
