Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore musically gifted class operating cases of teachers in charge at an elementary and middle school and their experiences. For this, an in-depth interview of qualitative research methods was used to investigate musically gifted class operating experiences of teachers in charge of the class. Research participants were five teachers who had more than a year experience in operating the musically gifted class. Targeted at the teachers, the in-depth interview was carried out for 40 or 80 minutes. The result of the research and analysis on the class operating experiences is in the following. First, the teachers in charge of the musically gifted class recognized that a level difference between students and their inactive participation in class were difficult to them. They found it difficult to deal with a level difference between musically gifted students and non-talented students and attitudes of some of students who formally participated in class for the completion of the musically gifted class and their parents. In this respect, a necessity to educate students as well as their parents came to the fore. Furthermore, the teachers in charge of the musically gifted class recognized that a lack of compensation systems for them was a big problem. They felt the burden of a lot of extra work for the class besides official schoolwork. It is very urgent for Education Office or school to promote teachers in charge of the musically gifted students and adopt additional point incentive systems in order to more continuously and systematically operate the musically gifted class than ever now. Second, the teachers in charge of the musically gifted class did take occupational training required by the Education Office, but they recognized that it was not effectively helpful to the class. It is necessary to carry out training related to the development of a program or data that can be applied in every class rather than a theory-based training program. Based on this, there is a need of another training system specialized for musically gifted students in the field of music. Third, the teachers in charge of the musically gifted class have felt satisfied with the great result of their students, have personally studied the education of the musically gifted who they didn’t know before and have operated the musically gifted class with a great responsibility and duty for education. They experienced a difficulty in an operation process, but they were considered to have intention to continuously operate the class in the future through these positive experiences because they were really satisfied with their teaching the students. Last, the teachers in charge of the musically gifted class hoped that the government and Education Office would systematically manage the class and support more assistants in order to continuously operate the class. It would be necessary to support the relevant teachers to enable them to have an ability to organize a suitable program for the class for the professional development of the teachers, enlarge an opportunity to take a training system, and find out improvements for the smooth operation of the musically gifted class. As a result, it was expected that it might be possible to provide improvement proposals in order to more continuously and systematically operate the musically gifted class through the exploration into the musically gifted class operating experiences of teachers in charge of the class at an elementary and middle school.
