불완전한 실체를 찾아가는 존재로서의 표현 연구

Abstract

인간은 실존하는 존재로 자신과 자신을 둘러싼 세계에 대해 끊임없이 알고 싶어 한다. 그러나 인간이 스스로를 객관화하여 파악하기란 불가능하기 때문에 전체가 아닌 일부분으로 혹은 왜곡된 이미지로 자신을 인식할 수 밖에 없고, 세상 또한 온전히 읽어내기 어렵기에 결국 인간은 불완전한 실체로 남아 불완전한 이미지들 사이에서 살아간다. 이러한 불완전한 실체에 대한 인식은 몽타주(Montage)와 이미지(이마주, Image)론을 통해 살펴볼 수 있다. 기억과 상상 사이에서 표현되는 몽타주는 실체가 없는 불완전한 이미지를 찾으려는 것이고, 이는 곧 주인을 찾을 수 없는 몽타주나 대상이 상실된 몽타주, 실재와 허상 사이에서 부유하는 몽타주로도 표현할 수 있다. 몽타주는 앙리 베르그송(Henri Bergson)의 이미지(이마주, image)와도 연결시킬 수 있다. 이미지는 이미 존재하는 ‘무엇’인 어떤 사물과 인간 인식 주관에 의해 형성된 표상의 중간적 존재다. 세상은 이러한 이미지의 총체로 되어 있으며, 인간은 평생을 거쳐 이미지의 전체 모습이 아닌 일부만을 부분적으로 마주할 수밖에 없다. 따라서 직접 경험하거나 인지한 부분만이 이미지화 되어 내면에 자리 잡을 뿐 결국 전체를 파악하기는 어렵다는 것이다. 내면의 잔재를 현실화하여 실재하게 표현하는 방법으로 연구자는 대상이 부재하는 몽타주의 행적을 찾기 위해 연출한 실험 공간인 <몽타주의 방>을 시작으로 더듬거리며 불분명한 형상을 만들고, 공백을 포함한 재료인 스펀지를 뜯어가며 잠재된 형상을 드러내는 행위를 통해 ‘스펀지 오브제’라는 개념을 구축한다. 작품들은 불명확한 상태 그대로 제시되거나 구체적 형상을 찾아가기 위한 과정으로 남겨진다. 이는 인간이 불완전한 실체이기에 실재에 가까워지려 하지만 불완전하게 남게 되는 모습과도 닮아 있다. 또한, 명확히 지각할 수 없는 내면의 이미지들로부터 몽타주의 행적을 찾아가는 것은 세상에 존재하는 무수한 몽타주와 하나로 규정되지 않고 잠재된 가능성으로 가득한 이마주에 대한 근원적 물음에 답하는 과정이라 할 수 있다. ; Human beings, as existents, consistently pursue to understand themselves and the world around them. However, since it is impossible for human beings to completely objectify and comprehend themselves, human beings are forced to perceive themselves as a part or a distorted image, thereby not fully interpreting the world as a whole. Thus, remaining an imperfect reality, human beings live along with imperfect images. Such perception of the imperfect reality can be seen through Montage and Image. Montage revealed between memory and imagination explores imperfect images without reality, which can be expressed as a montage where the original cannot be found, a montage deprived of its object, or a montage floating between reality and illusion. The concept of montage can also be linked to Henri Bergson's Image. Image is a middle entity between an object that is a 'something' already exists and a representation formed by a recognized subject of human perception. The world is made up of these images as a whole, and human beings have to partially face these images, not the entire image, through the rest of their lives. Therefore, although segments experienced directly or perceived are visualized and placed in one’s inner self, it is difficult to grasp the wholeness. Based on <the room of the montage>, which is an experimental space designed to find out the acts of the montage in which the object does not exist, the author created an groping obscure shape as a way to realize and visualize the residues of an inner self. By tearing sponge material including blankness, latent forms are uncovered. These acts lead to the concept of 'sponge objects'. The works are either presented in an unclear state itself or left as a process to find a specific shape. This is similar to how human beings as imperfect existence attempt to approach the reality but remain imperfect. Moreover, the process of looking for the vestiges of montage from the images that are not clearly perceivable is to answer the fundamental question of the myriad montages in the world and images full of potentials, not defined as one.
