Abstract
;In contemporary visual culture, where intermixed, flashy, and instant images float around in immense amount due to the development of media technology, a contemplation on finding perpetual and lasting components of them seems to be in need. With a view to provide a time and space for such a contemplation, I use painting as the main media for my artworks and represent the crux of landscapes along with a sense of subtle depth induced between the representation and materials. This thesis researches on the ways of perceiving the scenery of nature and how that perceived images could be expanded to a level of an ideal landscape. Aiming for an in-depth investigation of my artworks which is to express pictorially of the contemplation, the thesis incorporates art-historical analyses on their formal elements. Breaking away from the dualism of reason and experience, Chapter “A Visual-Perceptive Exploration of Landscape“ explicates the notion of ‘perception’ in phenomenological sense: it allows viewing and describing the nature as a holistic structure or form, and is applied to my way of seeing the nature as well. Employing the idea of ‘Zen(禪)’ – which is to explore, without any discriminative judgments, the real nature by means of calm meditation – I examine how a landscape depicted in such a viewpoint could be regarded, in an extended sense, as an ideal one. Furthermore, the notion of ‘a land of nothing(無河有之鄕)’, an infinite world, and that of ‘Wayu(臥遊)’, a sight-seeing while laying back on the ground, will be applied as a methodology in probing how a contemplation in daily life could avail reaching a mental composure even without a walk in the real nature. In the following chapter “The Pictorial Exploration of Landscape”, I investigate on the ways of expressing the landscapes by painting. Raising questions against linear perspective, which is to pursue an objectivist and realist representation in a single point of view – I research on some pieces of Romanticism that depict the principle of the nature and natural phenomena based on individual experiences and thoughts. The research then moves onto analyzing Modernist paintings that focus on such visual languages as color, form, and composition, reaching the state of abstraction with such elements. Admitting some influences from Romanticist and Modernist paintings, and yet searching for another style of painting, I clarify some aspects of my works that are differentiating from the precedents. In so doing, I concentrate and explore on colors that I define as one major pictorial language of my works. Referring to some contemporary paintings, I shed light on the depth of colors induced by my technique of overlaying and obscuring, as well as the meaning and aesthetic role of the color white in my works. In Chapter “White Landscape”, I describe in four different ways on how the aforementioned process and methodology of contemplation are applied and realized in my artworks. In “The Time of Staying” elucidates the process through which my encounter with frigid and lifeless landscapes are represented, and how the representation holds for a moment the sense of velocity forming the contemporary cityscape and leaving individuals in solitude, eventually offering the audience a time for a slow-paced contemplation. In “An Ideal Space" implicates a mental shelter latent in the memory of contemporaries. In ”Restrained Composition“ explains how the audience are expected to concentrate on their own thoughts upon feeling the stillness evoked from the minimalized composition and temperate expression – the impressions respectively coming out of the horizontal angle and flat plane used in the work. Lastly, in “Embracing Plane" observes how my whitened plane opens up itself to the exterior and is expanded to the void – a notion distinguished from a space of absence. It is through this still and plain canvas that I intend to reveal the process of integrating a time for contemplation as well as a positive and creative space on my paintings. Delivering a sense of tenderness as well as the contemporaneity by the depictions of cold and white landscapes, I discard the simplistic antagonism between the subject and object, the center and periphery, the figurative and abstract. Instead, I search for a new possibility of painting in forming relationships where the binominal elements overlay with each other and coexist. I wish to arouse from deep inside the mind of contemporaries a sensibility that makes them see the nature not just in structuralist or rationalist logic, but also in an intuitive and embracing viewpoint.
