Abstract
The purpose of this research is to observe the cultural policy of North Korea and trace its sociopolitical significances with due regard to comparison analysis on 'praxis' and 'affectus' in their early-regime-period art movies. Thanks to this research, we could find out what are the common and different aspects of those two regimes (Kim, Jungil and Kim Jungeun), and the hidden desires of North Korean Authorities and people. First of all, we could see that both continuity and change appears simultaneously in the cultural policies. The continuity is applied to 'socialism system protection' and 'imagery work for Super Boss'. In the cultural policy of North Korea, system protection and imagery work are the continuous and continual essential elements lasted since their establishment of political power. There is no exception in Kim, Jungil and Kim, Jungeun regimes and must be the major theme and material for North Korean arts at any period. However there are apparent changes as well. In Kim, Jungeun's era, they emphasize 'the scientification and modernization' focussing 'Heroic Super Boss' whereas in the Kim Jungil's era, they put 'the people' first focussing 'Wise Super Boss'. Maybe it comes from their needs in each regime; Kim, Jungil was targeting reunification of atomized society at the economic crisis, and Kim, Jungeun was focussing legitimacy security and powerful socialism country. Next, this research will analyze 'praxis' and 'affectus' of art movies. According to binomial opposition view analysis. we could assume both regimes are emphasizing group desire prior to individual one even they have slight diffrence that Kim, Jungil valued 'loyalty' whereas Kim. Jungeun put 'caution to money' first. This difference comes from their periodic situations; people breakaway due to economic difficulties in Kim, Jungil's era and people's change of awareness about 'money rather than party'. And with 'recognition', 'reversal of situation' and ‘flashback' analysis, we find out that in both regime periods they are emphasizing 'Super Boss's Memory'. Kim, Jungil focusses on memory of 'Super Boss's Orders' and Kim, Jungeun is interested in memory of 'Filial Kim Jungil and Heroic Kim Jungsuk'. 'Tension increasing' in Kim, Jungil's era intends to call defensive attention against the outside world in order to secure their system, and 'emphasizing loyalty and heroic actions of former Super Boss intend to secure his legitimacy. And 'autobiographical, objectives and in-depth' analysis tells us that 'Super Boss' is supposed to be on top depth of all characters in North Korea. Only differnce between two regimes is that there would be people together with 'Super Boss' in Kim, Jungil's era but not in Kim, Jungeun's era (He is the only one in the depth). It explains that Kim' Jungeun may be more desperate for the loyalty to 'Super Boss' rather than people to secure his legitimacy. On the other hand, analyzing 'affectus' with 'epic structure' gives us one common pattern all over the movies throughout two regime periods. All those movies in that periods, they induce empathy with having four steps in composition( introduction, development, turn and conclusion) which means they are not stimulating audiences' rationality. In Kim' Jungil's era, they seek direct appeal using 'Selwha' whereas in Kim' Jungeun's era, they do indirect appeal using 'music'. When we analyze theme songs, we could find that Kim, Jungil tries to touch sorrows of the audience with minor tones and traditional scales but Kim, Jungeun keeps relatively brighter atmosphere with mixing minor and major tones which might cause from taste changes of North Korean people by the inflow of outside cultures. And scenario emotion vocabulary analysis tells us that 'love, joy, sorrow, fear' for Kim' Jungil's era and 'love, joy, fear, sorrow' for Kim, Jungwun's era are the most frequent used emotion vocabulary in consecutive orders. It seem to be obsession to 'love and joy' ove Kim, Jungil and Kim, Jungeun both eras. However in Kim, Junheun's era, 'sorrow' is shown relatively less than in Kim, Jungil's era and 'fears and rages' are shown more. Less 'sorrows' show periodic trend to outgrow from the melodramatic emotions and more 'rages' reflect North Korea Authority's blocking policy against capitalism. And now we look for sociopolitical meanings of both regimes. Both regimes try to put out of audience activity by the assimilation, induce to feel guilty by themselves and reproduce the collective memories. Extinction of audience activity brings emotion internalization cast by North Korea Authority. The feeling of guilty comes very handy to prevent a specific 'praxis'. And the collective memories are very useful to strengthen community bond and grant sense of unity to North Korean people. Therefore they utilize the feeling of guilty and collective memories as major elements to secure their system and legitimacy. Of course there must be some changes simultaneously. There are some criticism over bureaucracy and cinematic expressions. Imperceptibly but apparently criticism against performance-first policy of military bureaucrats, complaints against authoritarian attitudes of security officers, and resistance against aspiring goal-oriented bureaucrats. It means in the beginning of Kim, Jungeun regime there must have been a certain expectation towards younger leader and social changes. And hollywood style movie expressions would reflect their actual limit to accept outside world somehow technically even how severely they try to avoid them. Hollywood style movie expressions are useful for cinematic fun so they have no other choice to accept them, whether consciously or not, in order to attract North Korean peoples' interests. And we notice the object and contents for their watch have been changed. In Kim, Jungil's era, targets for correction were actually all of North Korean people. but in Kim, Jungeun's era, they have been switched to 'bureaucrats'. It seems obviously impossible to target a specific group for correction in Kim, Jungil's era due to economic difficulties to put almost all North Korean people to pasture. On the contrary, with relatively stable economic situation, Kim' Jungeun may have urgent mission to have stable political security over the establishment. Based upon these facts, we could develop this research essentially further. Through movies, we would say the essential main that they keep watching is 'desires' of North Korean people. Especially the early target of Kim, Jungeun regime is 'individual desire'. There had been also alerts against individual desire in Kim, Jungil's era, but they were mostly related to family or job matters. Wishes to live together with beloved husband, to have compliments to their own work groups, and to live together with their own family were desires shown in the movies in Kim, Jungil's era. However that of Kim, Jungeun's era seems to be quite different essentially. The desires in these movies are rather related to 'I' than to 'family'. Here are 'my colorful life', 'my I-centered desire', and 'my successful career'. Do not generalize these desires as will to power or desire for honors. Could we say 'my joy' out of all wishes embracing these desires? If we find wish means being conscious of his own desire, we could say human being must have wishes as long as he is alive. Better or even best economic solution can not make all desires for 'joy' disappear all of sudden. Even we do not lack anything, we would have 'wishes' to move on to bigger perfection. The desire to 'joy' would be eternal. So if we sum up all facts and situation to express the characteristics of North Korea, we could say North Korea is 'emotional excess' state which includes North Korean people who wish their 'joys', North Korean Authorities who cast 'sorrows' and North Korean art groups who are supposed to accept their people's wishes.
