Abstract
;This study focuses on ‘the ex-gay movement’ which has been actively launched from 2013 in Korea by analyzing its main method, ‘the testimony of ex-gay’, in the perspective of feminism. In other words, it explores how ‘the movement’ produces and reproduces the concept of gender and sexuality, by tracing the context of shifting anti-queer strategy which is represented as ‘the ex-gay.’ Recently in Korea’s society, the queer movements have gradually expanded, and the influence has become significant. Under these circumstances, the collective act of opposing to homosexual/homosexuality was recognized as ‘hatred’ and more strongly criticized than before. ‘Sexual minority rights’ were set as something to be protected through the discussions of rights and hatred to/against the minorities. Accordingly, the strategy of hatred could not be used as a bright blueprint by the anti-queer groups anymore, and they required a new one. As a result, the strategy of ‘the ex-gay’ was adopted, and the movement emerged in Korea. Members of the ex-gay groups attempt to sustain their privileged positions as supporters of conservative Protectionism by using the fantasy of ex-gay, while maintaining their stances of homophobia at the same time. Compared with previous anti-gay groups, which have promoted ‘the bad habits’ of homosexuality and the provocative lines, the ex-gay group represents its image itself as sophisticated and emotional. It aims at 20-30's who had been in their derogatory position against the anti-gay's words and actions. Moreover, it actively appropriates the logic of queer movements with the cover of social justice. These ex-gay ministries can produce commercial profits and broaden their activities beyond religion. Their main method of propagandizing is to make videos of the ex-gay testimony. Online videos make it possible for the younger generation, who have been the main target of the ‘movements’, to access to their contents easily. The narrative of testimony is composed of the negative images of homosexuality through drastic comparison, which emphasizes the necessity of the ex-gay movements. Compared with homosexuals being represented as the objects who need aid and salvation, the ex-gays are seen as the people who ended up retaining subjectivity after ‘suffering’ from homosexuality. This logic is reinforced further by the narrative structure that emphasizes the acquisitional traits of homosexuality. Moreover, the moment of escaping, which is presented as sacred, suggests that the ex-gay requires the helping and the faith in order to escape from homosexuality. The ex-gay movements constitute these narratives into a universal one among all the homosexuals and the ex-gays. However, their processes of ‘reaching out for’ the ex-gay reveal the unnatural characteristics of heterosexuality. A series of narratives have assigned sexual traits to men and relational traits to women based on the traditional roles of gender, in constructing the causes and consequences of homosexuality. In this process, the gender binary ‘order of creation’ in Protestant beliefs has been selectively used for their logical development. The ex-gay group conceals the problems of the gender gap regarding socioeconomic power by representing the patriarchal monogamy model as ideal, which reinforces traditional gender roles. In addition, the heterosexuality/homosexuality dichotomy is strengthened by dismissing the existence of bisexuality. The ex-gays have made their positions secure by embodying a feminine/masculine body which conforms to normative heterosexual practice. By doing it, they represent themselves as having escaped from homosexuality to ‘normal’ heterosexuality. It is also interpreted as their entering into society as suitable members, regarding how they are now reproductive in social context. By not only representing the ex-gay but godly figures as well within the gender binary structure, scenes of men subordinating women are idealized. However, these narratives of testimony paradoxically reveal the instability of identities which requires continuous training and the vagueness of boundaries which are set between interchangeable identities. Understandably, the ex-gay group made their ‘ex-gay’ world stable by erasing and evading those conflicts and contradictions. The ex-gay discourse is not a new one but a reproduction and transformation of the existing heterosexual-centering/dichotomous ideology. The ex-gay movement is a part of the political plan to restore the status of the religious, which is currently in crisis, through returning to heterosexual gender norm narratives This research tried to capture contradictions in the use of ‘the ex-gay’ for achieving their political goals and revealing the structure of the ideology surrounding the movement in the context of concrete reality. This process of dislocating narratives of the ex-gay experiences, which have not attracted much attention as a research subject, reveals the weak structure of the narrative and provides a forum for how to take actions effectively.
