제임스 호너(James Horner)의 영화음악 분석을 통한 음악적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 할리우드에서 다양하고 폭넓은 음악장르를 통하여 활발하게 활동했던 영화음악 작곡가 제임스 호너(James horner;1953~2015)의 영화 <어메이징 스파이더맨(Amazing spiderman,2012)>의 음악적 특징에 관한 연구이다. 제임스 호너는 그가 불의의 사고로 타계하기까지 할리우드 영화계에서 100여 편이 넘는 다양한 영화들의 인상적인 오리지널 스코어들을 완성 시켜 왔다. 우리에게 잘 알려진 영화인 <타이타닉>과 <가을의 전설>, <아바타> 등의 특유의 서정적이고 감정적인 테마곡으로 대중들에게 잘 알려져 있는 호너는 클래식을 바탕으로 한 전통 오케스트라 작곡을 고수하며 창의적인 음악적 스타일을 확립해 왔던 독보적인 작곡가이다. 원작 만화를 기반으로 하여 만들어진 영화 <어메이징 스파이더맨>은 호너의 유일무이한 슈퍼히어로 작품이자 유작이 된 작품이다. 본 논문은 제임스 호너의 마지막 작품인 <어메이징 스파이더맨>의 음악분석을 통하여 감독의 연출의도와 영화 스토리의 흐름에서 나타나는 음악의 역할과 기능적 요소로 작품의 음악적 특징을 알아보고 영상속의 투영된 음악을 통해 둘의 상관관계를 연구하였다. 영화 <어메이징 스파이더맨>은 <슈퍼맨>과 <배트맨>과 같은 대표적인 슈퍼히어로 음악 스타일인 강한 어택적 사운드 이펙트의 활용과 역동적인 비트감을 형성하는 리듬위주의 전형적인 사운드와는 다르게 차별화되고 색다른 분위기의 음악을 생각하여 감독 마크웹은 특별히 제임스 호너에게 음악을 의뢰하였다. 본 연구는 기존 슈퍼히어로 작품들의 음악을 담당하였던 동시대 작곡가인 대니 엘프만과 한스짐머 음악의 선행연구를 통하여 일반적인 슈퍼히어로 영화들과 어떠한 차별성이 있는지와 <어메이징 스파이더맨>을 통해 그동안 호너가 맡았던 또 다른 작품들의 선행연구와 비교하여 어떤 차이점이 있으며 그의 작품경향과 음악적 기법을 어떻게 반영시켰는지 알아보고자 한다. 영화 <어메이징 스파이더맨>의 전체에서 삽입된 음악에 대한 연구가 처음으로 이루어졌고 이 작품을 통해 호너는 또 한번 아카데미 음악상 부분에 노미네이트 되어 음악적 역량을 인정받았을 뿐 아니라 그가 불의의 사로고 타계 하기 전 마지막 유작이라는 점에서 연구의 의의를 들 수 있다. 연구의 처음단계로 영화 <어메이징 스파이더맨>이 원작 만화인 슈퍼히어로의 모티브를 바탕으로 만든 작품이라는 점을 생각하여 슈퍼히어로 영화들의 주요 변천과정과 해당 영화음악들을 살펴보았으며 제임스 호너의 생애와 작품세계를 조사하여 그의 음악관과 음악사적 위치를 알아보고자 한다. 또한 연구 작품의 제작배경을 살펴보면서 영화감독인 마크 웹에 관한 작품경향과 작품의도를 파악하여 보았다. 연구방법으로는 분석할 작품의 감독의 연출의도를 파악하기 위해 영화의 내용을 발단, 전개, 절정, 결말로 나누어 줄거리를 정리하고 음악의 인 앤 아웃(In&out)에 따른 음악적 기능과 그에 따른 음악기법들을 분석하였다. 연구결과 <어메이징 스파이더맨>에서 나타나는 제임스 호너의 음악은 주요 캐릭터들을 묘사하는 테마음악이 존재하며 전체 작품 안에서 여러 번의 테마음악의 다양한 변주를 통하여 상황에 따라 대비되는 인물의 감정과 심리상태를 반영하고 영상의 스토리 흐름에 따른 상황적 음악, 특정 소재나 배경을 나타내는 음악적인 요소들로 구성되어 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 대부분의 슈퍼히어로 작품과는 차별성을 띄는 주인공의 순수하고 선한 인간적인 내면의 모습을 담은 피터라는 인물과 다른 한편으로 영웅으로서의 삶의 책임과 무게를 감당하는 영웅적인 스파이더맨 이라는 한사람의 이면적인 모습을 음악적으로 디테일하게 묘사하여 그 어느 작품보다 인물의 내면적인 심리상태를 중점으로 부각시켜 보다 깊이 있고 심도 있게 표현하였다. 이렇게 감독의 연출 의도를 파악하는데 있어 그의 음악은 영상의 흐름과 연관되어 밀접한 상호작용을 하며 등장인물들의 심리적 상태와 상황을 효과적으로 표현하여 전달시킴으로써 영화를 이끌어가는 핵심적인 중요한 역할을 하고 있었다. 본 논문의 연구를 통해 앞으로도 제임스 호너 음악에 관련하여 체계적이고 지속적인 연구가 보다 많이 이루어지길 기대하며 호너의 다른 작품들을 분석 연구 하는 이들에게 참고할만한 도움이 되기를 바란다.;The study is about musical characteristics of the film “Amazing Spiderman” directed by James Horner (1953~2015), who, as American composer of film scores, collaborated on multiple projects in a wide array of music genres with Hollywood directors. James Horner produced impressive original scores of more than 100 films before he died from unexpected accident. He, in Korea, is renowned for scoring films like Titanic, Legends of the Fall and Avatar, all of which were very popular in the country and struck emotional chord in the public. His composing style is characterized by orchestral chord based on classic music to display creative style in an unrivalled way. The film “Amazing Spiderman,” based on cartoon, holds significance in that it is the only film about superhero for which Horner wrote the score and serves as posthumous work. The study aims to look into musical characteristics of the film score “Amazing Spiderman” involving role of music and functional elements evident in director’s intention and the plot by analyzing the film, the last work left before he died, and identify correlation between the two through music being projected into video image. Marc Webb asked Horner to produce the film score for Amazing Spiderman which gets differentiated from the score for superhero films like “Superman” and “Batman” whose scores are characterized by strong attack and beat sounds and typical rhythms. The study aims to look into what differentiates Honers’ scores from those of superhero films in general by analyzing scores of his contemporaries such as Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer who mainly wrote the scores for superhero films and what makes Horner’s score for Amazing Spiderman different from his other scores to identify how Horner reflected musical trend and techniques into his scores. It was the first time that the study on the score interjected into film “Amazing Spiderman” was made. The film score caused Horner to be nominated by Academy Award again for his musical competence and holds significance in that it is the last work left before he died from unexpected accident. In the first step, the study took a close look at how superhero films and the scores for them have changed considering that the film “Amazing Spiderman” is based on cartoon about superhero, examined James Horner’s life and his art world to figure out his view toward music and his position in the history of music. In addition, the study looked into the background against which the film was produced and how and why director Marc Webb made the film. To that end, the study divided the plot into exposition, development, climax and conclusion and analyzed musical functions and techniques resulting from In & Out. The result shows that theme music prevails over the film score, whose variations reflect characters’ emotions and psyche being in contrast with unfolding situation and are composed of circumstantial music and musical elements reflecting certain situation or background in accordance with development of video plot. In addition, the score portrays double sides of a character who is represented by a person called Peter who is innocent and good, which is differentiated from most other superhero films, and by Spiderman who needs to shoulder life responsibilities and the graveness as a hero, emphasizing inner side of a character in more depth and detail than in any other scores. In that way, his film score closely interacts with video story by figuring out underlying motif behind the film and effectively delivers characters’ emotions and development of the plot, thereby playing a crucial role in making the film understood. The study hopefully will be able to serve not just as the basis for systematic and steady study in relation to James Horner’s scores but also as a reference for the benefit of those who study other scores of James Horner.
