평행분석의 확장

Abstract

요인(차원)의 개수를 결정하는 것은 요인분석에서 모형을 설정(1요인 모형, 2요인 모형 등)하는데 가장 중요한 단계로, 평행분석은 고유값에 근거하여 요인의 개수를 결정하기 위해 고안된 대표적인 차원평가기법이다. 평행분석은 실제 표본의 고유값과 그 실제 표본의 특성을 반영하여 생성한 무선표본의 고유값을 비교하여 요인의 개수를 결정하는 방법으로, 고유값에 근거하여 요인의 개수를 결정하는 다른 방법들(예: 카이저 규칙, 스크리 도표)과 달리 요인의 개수를 과대추정하지 않고, 이론적으로 보다 타당한 근거를 갖고 있다고 평가받는다. 이러한 평행분석은 본래 주성분분석에서 사용하고자 고안된 방법이지만, 사회과학분야에서 공통요인분석의 비중이 증가함에 따라 공통요인의 개수를 결정하고자 할 때에도 적용하게 되었다. 그리고 최근에는 범주형 변수를 다루는 공통요인분석에 평행분석을 적용하기 위한 연구들이 증가하고 있다. 이외에도 문항반응이론에서 일차원성 가정을 검정하는 도구로서의 평행분석의 기능을 보여주는 연구들도 증가하는 추세이다. 이에 본 연구는 지난 수십 년간 보완 및 확장되어 오고 있는 평행분석에 관한 여러 연구들의 논의들을 통합하여 체계적으로 정리하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 먼저, 평행분석이 주로 이용되는 요인분석의 두 가지 분석방법인 주성분분석과 공통요인분석의 원리 및 특징을 설명한다. 다음으로 평행분석의 배경, 원리 및 분석방법, 그리고 장점 및 적용방법을 설명한다. 그 다음으로, 평행분석이 요인분석 내·외로 확장된 쟁점을 제시한다. 먼저, 평행분석이 범주형 변수를 다루는 공통요인분석에 적용될 수 있도록 제안된 여러 연구들의 쟁점들을 분류하여 제시한다. 그리고 요인분석 영역을 넘어 문항반응이론 분야의 일차원성을 검정하는 도구로서의 평행분석에 관한 논의들도 제시한다. 마지막으로, 평행분석을 실질적으로 활용하려는 연구자들이 참고할 수 있도록 여러 연구자들에 의해 공통적으로 제안된 방법들을 통합하여 제시한다. 평행분석에 관한 전반적인 이해를 돕고자 본 연구에서는 평행분석의 원리, 분석 방법, 그리고 장점 등을 자세하게 설명할 뿐만 아니라 기존의 평행분석에서 확장된 방법 및 내용을 체계적으로 파악할 수 있도록 여러 쟁점들을 세분화하여 정리하였다. 그리고 더 나아가 연구자들이 실제 연구에서 평행분석을 사용할 수 있도록, 세분화된 쟁점들 각각에서 다수의 연구자들이 공통적으로 일치된 의견을 보이는 방법들을 제시하였다. 이와 같은 종합적인 분석 및 설명을 통해 실제 연구에서 평행분석을 이용하여 요인의 개수를 결정하고자 할 때, 연구자의 자료와 본 연구의 내용을 다각적으로 고려하여 최적의 평행분석방법을 연구하는 방향으로 사용될 수 있기를 기대한다.;With the decision of how many factors to retain is the most critical process of factor analysis, parallel analysis designed to estimate the number of factor based on the eigenvalues is the most representative dimensionality assessment technique. As parallel analysis is method performed by comparing the eigenvalue of actual data with the eigenvalue of random data reflected property of the actual data, this method is considered not to be overestimated and to have theoretically more proper evidence than other techniques(Kaiser rule and scree plot) based on the eigenvalues. This method is originally designed for principal component analysis, however this method is applied in common factor analysis with value of common factor analysis increases in social science field. Recent studies that are applying parallel analysis to common factor analysis using categorical variable go on increasing. Besides, these studies showing function of parallel analysis as tool testing unidimensionality of item response theory go on increasing. The aims of the present study are to integrate studies on parallel analysis to be complemented and extended in the past decades. First, this study presents the rationale, analysis method, strength, and application method of parallel analysis in the comprehensive way. And it organizes many issues about parallel analysis to understand method and content extended from Horn’s parallel analysis in term of inside and outside factor analysis. Finally, the study proposes consensus in many studies in each of issues organized by this study. Though this comprehensive discussion, the present study is expected to contribute to the field where parallel analysis are used by considering one’s data and content of this study.
