사회적 배제 경험이 전위된 공격성에 미치는 영향

Abstract

Social exclusion experience causes intense psychological distress and has a great influence on emotional(Leary, 2010), cognitive(Baumeister, Twenge, & Nuss, 2002), and physical(Eisenberger, 2012) aspects. After the social exclusion experience, an individual may exhibit pro-social behavior(Maner, DeWall, Baumeister, & Schaller, 2007) or rather aggressive behavior(DeWall & Richman, 2011). Emergence of pro-social behavior following social exclusion experience is evolutionally adaptive. However, antisocial behavior like displaced aggression is a maladaptive behavior that worsens social relationship. Therefore the purpose of this study was to identify the mechanism of displaced aggression by social exclusion, expecially to investigate the effects of attribution style and self-compassion. For this study, 86 women participated in the experiment. Before the experiment they were tested online survey that divided internal attribution style and external attribution style. The following is experiment processes. First, social exclusion was manipulated with a writing task. Every participant wrote about their previous experience of social exclusion. Then, the group was divided into the self-compassion writing condition and the control condition. Finally, displaced aggression was measured with a task in which participants were asked to select an appropriate level of noise for others. A two-way ANOVA was conducted to determine a statistically significant difference between the attribution style and manipulation of self-compassion on displaced aggression. Specifically, among those in external attribution style there was a significant difference in displaced aggression according to the performance of the self-compassion writing task showing that people who wrote self-compassion writing present lower displaced aggression than people who wrote control writing. However, among those in internal attribution style there was no significant difference in displaced aggression according to the performance of the self-compassion writing task. In other words, when people who have external attribution style perform self-compassion writing they present lower displaced aggression after social exclusion experience. This study proved the relation between social exclusion experience and displaced aggression was different according to attribution style and self-compassion. It also examined the effectiveness of the self-compassion writing task to weaken the negative effects of the social exclusion experience.;사회적 배제 경험은 극심한 심리적 고통을 유발하며 정서적(Leary, 2010), 인지적(Baumeister, Twenge, & Nuss, 2002), 신체적(Eisenberger, 2012)으로도 큰 영향을 미친다. 이러한 사회적 배제 경험 이후 개인은 사회적 관계를 회복하기 위한 친사회적 행동을 나타내기도 하지만(Maner, DeWall, Baumeister, & Schaller, 2007) 오히려 무고한 사람에 대한 공격성과 같은 반사회적인 행동을 나타내기도 한다(DeWall & Richman, 2011). 사회적 배제 경험 후에 친사회적인 행동이 나타나는 것은 진화론적으로 적응적이라고 볼 수 있지만 전위된 공격성과 같은 반사회적인 행동은 사회적 관계를 더욱 악화시키는 부적응적인 행동이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 사회적 배제 경험과 전위된 공격성 간의 관계에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 여러 요인들 중 귀인성향과 자기자비의 영향을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 검증하기 위해 만 18-25세 여성 86명을 대상으로 실험연구를 진행하였다. 실험 전에 만 18-25세의 여성 중 실험 참여 희망자를 대상으로 귀인성향에 대한 온라인 설문을 실시하였고, 설문 결과에 따라 내부귀인 집단과 외부귀인 집단으로 구분하였다. 실험 참여자들은 모두 과거에 경험한 사회적 배제 경험을 회상하여 글쓰기를 실시하였다. 그 후 자기자비 글쓰기 혹은 통제 글쓰기 조건에 무선 배정되어 해당 조건의 글쓰기 과제를 실시하였다. 마지막으로 가상의 추후 연구 참여자들에 대한 소음 제공 정도를 결정하게 함으로써 전위된 공격성을 측정하였다. 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 이원분산분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 전위된 공격성에 대한 귀인성향과 자기자비 글쓰기 수행 유무 간에 유의미한 상호작용 효과를 확인하였다. 외부귀인 집단의 경우, 자기자비 글쓰기 수행 후에 더 낮은 전위된 공격성을 나타냈으나 내부귀인 집단의 경우, 자기자비 글쓰기 수행 유무에 따라 전위된 공격성에서 차이를 보이지 않았다. 즉, 외부귀인 집단에 한해서 자기자비 글쓰기 과제를 수행한 참여자들이 사회적 배제 경험 후에 더 낮은 전위된 공격성을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 사회적 배제 경험이 전위된 공격성을 표출시키는 기제에서 귀인성향과 자기자비의 역할을 살펴보고, 사회적 배제 경험의 부정적 영향을 완화시킬 수 있는 자기자비 글쓰기의 효과성을 확인하였다.
