Abstract
The purpose of this study is to research on Franz Joseph Haydn's (1732-1809) . Haydn is a representative composer of classicism in the 18th century. His 52 Piano sonatas were divided into three; early, mid, and late periods, and their periodical features were evident. Early piano sonatas were composed for harpsichord and influenced by the preclassical style, and these short pieces of galant style were called Divertimento or Partita. Most of them are composed of three movements. Minuets were used as second or third movement. The middle period Sonatas were influenced by C.P.E. Bach’s Empfindsamer Stil so Haydn used directive words in these pieces. He composed five sonatas in minor key among those middle period works titled 'Sonata' by Haydn himself. This period was transition from harpsichord to piano instrument. In the late Sonatas, he used all forms that Haydn had encountered, such as sonata-allegro, double variation, slow movement in song form, rondo, rondo sonata, and so on. In accordance with the development of the piano instrument, he used idiomatic technique and emphasized the harmony. He played an important role in establishing Classical Sonata. To understand , which was composed in 1790 and belonged to Haydn's later works, I analyzed the use of theme, harmony, and rhythm, focusing on form and structure in this thesis. Through this, I could understand the various structures of and the evolution of Classical Sonata.
