Abstract
This study aims to examine the types of quotative constructions, pragmatic meanings and characteristics, and the function of discourse revealed in radio news interviews. Studies on quotative constructions have been conducted at the syntactical level mainly focusing on the manner of quotation and the structural features of quotative constructions. However, it is necessary to study how quotation is used by focusing on its realization in actual discourse, not by sentence unit. The reason for this is that the structure and semantic function of quotative constructions have a close relationship with pragmatics including the intention and viewpoint of the speaker. This study tried to examine the pragmatic features and discourse functions of quotative constructions by analyzing the usage patterns of constructions with a focus on discourse and pragmatics. This study chose radio news interviews to assess the usage pattern of quotative constructions. Radio news interviews have the structure of an active interaction between the conversation participants and it is a type of discourse that is characterized by information transmissibility, planning, completion, and interchangeability. Among the various mediums for information delivery, radio news interviews not only reveal how participants speak through the delivery of the contents and the manner in which the interview is conducted in comparison with print media interviews, but they also clearly reveal the role of the interviewer as well as the interviewee. In addition, unlike TV news interviews, radio interviews tend to make the conversation participants become more engrossed in the interview because of the absence of visual elements or distractions. From the point of view of researchers, radio interviews are good because radio interviews deliver the message only in spoken language so the discourse can be analyzed by focusing solely on verbal aspects. Moreover, radio interviews allow for the collection of speech data from interviewees from various social backgrounds because the subjects of radio news interviews tend to be employed in a relatively wide range of occupations – from experts to members of the general public. This study examined how quotative constructions, whose function of delivering information is encoded in linguistics, is used in realizing the purpose of producing radio interviews and constructing discourse organizationally, and what function the utterance has. The organization of this study is as follows. Chapter I outlined the purpose and necessity of this study, and reviewed previous studies related to the subject of this study by categorizing them into studies on quotative constructions and studies conducted from a metapragmatics perspective. In addition, studies on quotative constructions were divided into studies with syntactic features, semantic functions, and the use of quotative constructions as a discourse strategy, and studies conducted from a meta-pragmatic perspective were divided into studies that discussed the concept of metapragmatics and studies that tried to apply the metapragmatic perspective to detailed linguistic phenomenon. At the end of this chapter, the study clarified the research problems related to this study and explained the reason for choosing radio news interviews as the study subject and the significance of the interviews as research data. Chapter Ⅱ summarized the concept and classification types of quotation and quotative constructions. This chapter examined the extent to which the concept of quotation was applied and the subject and contents of quotation, and it defined quotative construction as ‘a construction that expresses the utterance /cognitive act of using others’ or one’s own words or their writings'. In this case, this chapter described that the construction of quotation as a construction focusing on quotative verbs had a component showing quotative construction, and the content of quotation included not only past speech but also a virtual speech or reason. In addition, this chapter developed the discussion that the dichotomous classification which has categorized the construction of quotation as direct speech and indirect speech with regard to the study of existing syntactic perspectives could not adequately describe the realization patterns of various realized quotative constructions in actual conversation situations. This chapter presented three criteria for classifying the types of quotative constructions and summarized the classification of the types of quotative constructions. The criteria for classifying the types of quotative constructions presented in this paper were: first, source of the speech of quotation; second, content and delivery method of quotation; and third, attitude of the speaker of quotation. According to each type, it was found that the realized patterns of the speaker’s viewpoint, the elements of the higher sentence, the form of the quoted clause, and the quotative marker were different. Chapter III dealt with the usage pattern and the pragmatic characteristics of quotative constructions in radio news interviews. This chapter examined the expression of deixis that reveals from whose perspective the contents of quotative constructions are delivered, the manner in which the quotative constructions in specific speech acts are performed, and the assumptions or attitudes toward the contents of the quotation that the speaker had, in order to understand the mechanism by which the speaker adopted the quotative constructions. From the perspective of pragmatics, the factors that must be considered in order to understand the discourse structure and semantic function of quotative constructions are elements related to the speech context, such as the speaking situation of the original speech and the current speech scenario where the quotation occurs. First, this study examined how time deixis expression, spatial deixis expression, and dialogue participants deixis expressions were expressed according to the speaking context and the speaker's choice. Deixis expressions were used differently depending on whose viewpoint was being expressed between the original speaker and the reporter, or how the message was delivered. Also, there was an example in which a listener-oriented deixis expression was selected to reveal the consciousness of the (radio) listener, recipient of the interview. This chapter also tried to understand the relationship between the participants in the interview and the participants’ attitude on the interview situation through the quotative constructions in specific speech acts. The chapter examined how the realization of quotative constructions in specific speech acts in the interviews was achieved in different ways, compared to everyday conversations. It was possible to discern how participants in the conversation were able to convey more meaning and understanding compared to the information that had been conveyed to them and how intimacy could be communicated through this. The last part of chapter III examined the situation wherein the speaking verb used in quotative construction obstructed the premise of the quotative construction from being realized and the speech result caused by this. Furthermore, the background information that the conversation participants took for granted in quotative utterances and the pragmatic premise were also assessed. Chapter IV discussed the function of the discourse that could be achieved through the use of reported speech constructions by participants in news interviews. This study tried to elicit the discourse function that quotative constructions performed in radio news interviews based on the examination of existing discussions and the analysis of the quotative constructions in Chapter Ⅱ and Chapter III. As a result, the discourse function of quotative constructions could be summarized by dividing discourse function into ‘monitoring function', and ‘dramatic function’ and ‘distancing function'. The contents and structure ‘monitoring function' of the discourse enables the speaker to actively intervene and evaluate the contents of speech as a commentator, and check and manage the flow of the interview topic. And the ‘dramatic function’ is the function wherein the speaker as the observer describes the context of the original speech and recounts the situation dramatically through the quotative constructions in which the voices of the original speaker and reporter overlap. Lastly, the ‘distancing function' of quotative constructions is a function whereby the speaker secures reliability/credibility as a transmitter of information and smooth communication is facilitated. This chapter found that quotative constructions was mainly used to avoid direct and assertive expressions and that this was chosen by the speaker to create a sense of distance, reduce the possibility of either the speaker or listener losing face, and to establish a sense of connection through cooperative dialogue. The Chapter Ⅴ concludes the study by summarizing the discussion and reiterating the significance of this paper and points to future tasks.
