Abstract
The Backside of modernistic Standpoint portrayed in August Sander’s Citizens of the Twentieth Century (1980) This study aims to understand German photographer August Sander(1876-1964)’s implicative perspective from the backside of modernistic standpoint through his collective portrait of German people in Weimar Republic (referring to the republic that governed Germany form 1919 to 1933) titled Citizens of the Twentieth Century (Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts, 1980). Sander sought to portray the most objective image of different professions and classes who best represent the times by categorizing the photographs into seven groups, namely ‘The Farmer’ ‘The Craftsman’ ‘The Woman’ ‘Professions’ ‘The Artist’ ‘The Metropolis’ and ‘The Last People’. Sander repeatedly underlined two factors, rational perspective and sophisticated reason, as the most fundamental principle of photography, which is mirrored in his statement “Seeing, Observing and Thinking(Sehen, Beobachten und Denken)” that served as a basis for his book. Sander’s remark is an explicit expression of the western civilization’s visual-oriented modern awareness, developed through the ‘eyes’ that is directly related to rationality and reason. However, unlike Sander’s attempt at maintaining absolute neutrality through rational perspective and sophisticated reason, most of the photographs in the book lacked contemporary characteristic and instead, strongly reflected Sander’s subjective interpretation of the societal images in general. In utilizing the objective reproducibility of photography, Sander tried to portray a historical image of German society that was on the path to entering the modern era. Interestingly though, the nostalgic desire for the return of social order during past times was hidden in Sander’s gaze that centered on social aspects of a certain period of time. This is well reflected in is favoritism of photographs grouped under ‘The Farmer’ and ‘The Craftsman’ that captured the image of a traditional society. Although German women during the Weimar Republic period actively participated in the labor market and women’s empowerment efforts were widespread throughout society, Sander appeared to turn back the clock and portrayed a patriarchal aspect in the photographs categorized under ‘The Woman’ by stressing their roles as a mother or a wife. He also divided the inherent traits of men and women into ‘reason’ and ‘instinct’, cleary showing the dichotomous thinking of modern western countries that regarded women as inferior to men. Furthermore, Sander considered ‘The Artist’ and ‘Professions’, who symbolized human civilization, as representing mainstream players of a society that exerted direct and indirect influence over a nation’s existence. The factor that differentiated the two groups from others was that they held a professional degree. In other words, Sander set the rank of societal members based on an individual’s intellectual level, which derived from his authoritative perspective of viewing sophisticated intellect as value equivalent to that of power. The photographs grouped under ‘The Metropolis’ and ‘The Last People’ represent images of social outcasts, including people of the lower class and people with disabilities. Sander viewed these social outcasts as fictional characters in a romantic novel rather than as a members of society. He also considered them as a sacrificial lamb during the process of society’s progression and evolution. Such point of view is closely related to the progressive historical view of modern western nations. As can be seen, the ‘objective portrayal of a time period’ that was continuously advocated by Sander derived from his very own arbitrary and subjective views. In short, the so-called ‘neutral perspective’ that Sander attempted to pursue was, in fact, an objectification of people which reveals the underside of modern consciousness developed centering on perspective and reason. This study bears significance in that it examined the multi-faceted traits of photographs taken by Sander’s single-lens camera in an attempt to develop a critical view of Sander’s works that were collectively referred to as documentary photography or straight photography.
