Abstract
HIV/AIDS is a priority health issue in Ghana. As a result, the Government of Ghana with the assistance of foreign partners and other organized groups including NGOs have helped curb the spread of the disease to its current prevalence of 1.6%. Nevertheless women and adolescent girls in Ghana are excessively vulnerable than their male counterparts. It is worth noting that 62% of people living with HIV/AIDs in Ghana are women/ adolescent girls. Therefore this paper sought to understand why and also how Ghanaian women’s vulnerability to HIV is being reinforced by socio-cultural factors embedded in the Ghanaian society. A qualitative analyses of secondary data on HIV epidemic and response in Ghana and other relevant national and international publications revealed that women’s vulnerable working conditions leading to the “working poor”, fear of partner’s “non-maintenance” and men’s multiple casual heterosexual relationships are the main factors that limit women safe sex practices leading to their high prevalence of HIV/AIDS. Additionally, it was found that societal extreme importance and perceptions about marriage, child bearing and stigma of divorce sustains these factors in society. Finally, policy recommendations including women economic empowerment, gender sensitive preventive measures, community-based support systems among others to help reduce the infections among women and girls were proposed. This is necessary because the study revealed that, high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among Ghanaian women is largely related to issues of urbanization, internal migration, employment, social protection and welfare inefficiencies, and above all excessive societal defined roles and expectations.
