Abstract
Adoption of modern scientific instruments to archaeology has made a drastic improvement in study of relics, and gives us more complete information of the past. The information obtained scientifically provides bases for proper conservation and restoration of cultural heritages. Scientific analysis of heritages with modern instruments set forth in late 1980s in Korea. The earlier studies generally focused on identification of materials using X-ray diffractometers. With the improvement of instruments and techniques based on new principles, more complete and richer information could be obtained. As an effective and nondestructive analysis tool with high resolution, Raman spectroscopy has become an indispensable technique in archaeology. This thesis opens with a report about the Raman spectroscopy and its general instrumentation. Then a brief overview of research history of colored heritages in Korea and several nondestructive techniques. Then, the results of studies of Korean traditional pigments utilizing Raman spectroscopy is presented: Identification of pigments of a Buddha painting, depth profiling of pigment layers of Dancheong (traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings, 丹靑), and an analytical study on azurite and malachite pigments in its properties as particles. In appendix, summaries about the selection rules of Raman active modes and an example of applying selection rule is suggested. Application of Raman spectroscopy to archeology has just begun in Korea. The status seems a bit behind that of Europe, where the serious adoption of Raman spectroscopy begun already in the early 1990s and much study has piled up. Raman spectroscopy can be applied not only for the identification of pigments, but also for the analysis of earth-wares, potteries, or metal relics. We hope our studies would play a role of step stones for the future research of cultural heritages with Raman spectroscopy.
