Abstract
Today the curriculum and contents of mathematics in technical high schools are the same as those in general high schools even though technical high school students are asked to learn mathematics which is prerequisite learning, so technical high school students do not match what they learn during mathematics lessons to their major subject learning. To solve this problem math teachers and major subject teachers in technical high schools have researched on how to reorganize mathematics textbooks. There are, however, many studies in which teachers lower the levels of the math questions in the textbooks and give a lot of simple formula questions to improve students’ academic achievements and to change students’ attitude to mathematics. Recently, the number of specialized vocational high school and meister high school students who want to equip themselves the skills and function which are essential in work places and to achieve the objectives, and then show self-directed and active attitude is increasing (Kim Jungsook·Na Minju, 2015). Therefore, fields of mathematics in technical high schools need practical changes. The researcher feels the necessity of reorganization of math textbooks through the mathematical connection with major subjects. In this study the mathematical connection with electric circuits is used to reorganize the math textbooks. The objective of this study is that after teaching with the reorganized textbooks the writer checks students’ responses and changes their attitudes. The following research questions are set to accomplish the objective. The First Subject for Inquiry: The researcher reorganizes the math textbooks by connection of contents and curriculum of mathematics and electric curcuits in technical high schools. The second subject for inquiry: After teaching with the reorganized math textbook, the writer receives the responses from students. To solve the first subject for inquiry the researcher interviews 6 major subject teachers and confirms the reorganization of the mathematics textbooks, and then after analyzing electric circuit textbooks reorganizes the math textbooks required for the study of electric circuits. When analyzing the electric circuit textbooks the writer searches what math contents are connected with the sample questions in electric circuit textbooks. Later, the writer compares the times of these two subjects’ teaching periods. Through this analysis the researcher finds out the most necessary math content is ‘trigonometric functions in Calculus II’ for electricity major students to understand alternating current circuits but the textbooks of 2009 revised curriculum do not carry trigonometric functions. That’s why the writer puts ‘trigonometric functions in Calculus II’ before students learn alternating current circuits. To solve the second subject for inquiry, the writer has the reorganized textbook revised and supplemented by 5 major subject teachers and 3 math teachers, and gives lectures to 7 1st grade electricity major students. Later, the writer examines the students’responses from the perspective of the study result and the attitude of the students. Moreover, the writer makes the lesson and the structure of the reorganized textbook learned through the context of electric circuits of ‘the principle of AC generator’and lets students learn by themselves through experiences. Especially, students activate AC generator experiment model through a javaLab exercise and realize the necessity of trigonometric function learning. Actually, those students who have studied for the electrician license written exams have more interest in the reorganized textbook, experimenting java of AC generators. Also, through the activity that students make the teaching aids ‘Pararack sin’by themselves, students understand the exact definition of the trigonometric functions as the angle changes and draw the sine function graphs. When they draw the sine graphs where cycles, the max and the min change, they share their ideas. One student experiences the mathematical connection which develops to phase differences of AC generators. To check the study result by the reorganized textbooks the writer examines the students study results first by checking how many questions they answer. Five students out of seven answer correctly more than seven questions out of ten. The result shows that the reorganized textbook do not influence students’ mathematics scores or electric circuit scores much but to the students whose grades are very good or very low in electric circuits are affected by the reorganized textbook. Next, the writer finds out the usefulness of the reorganized textbooks and students’ interest and confidence about mathematics through survey. The interest and confidence show positive results. Students think ‘our lives are connected with mathematics in many ways’ and one student says he could learn the life through math (S7). However, students’ confidence in the reorganized textbook stays or lowers. Students show their interest when they draw graphs AC generators express, but they say their confidence lower when they are asked to use interaction formula between cycle and frequency without exact concepts of frequency. Through this research the writer concludes students need the reorganized mathematics textbooks to learn electric circuits and finds out that students who study with the reorganized textbooks need not memorize but understand the contents. Also, to the mathematics reorganized textbooks needed for technical high school students, the writer realizes if students try to understand and challenge, they can understand their major subjects in depth. When the writer started the lesson with the reorganized textbooks, she received negative responses from students. Later, however, students changed their attitude and answer the questions when the writer referred the terms like ‘peak-to-peak’, ‘phase difference’, ‘3 phase alternating current circuit’, etc. Therefore, students are able to understand the contents of electric circuits connected to mathematics much better through the reorganized textbooks and attend mathematics lesson more actively.
