Abstract
With the increased use of mobile devices and development of internet technology, the use of SNS is universalized. Thus, social viewing which is the communication behaviors between users related to TV programs through SNS, receives attention. However, to explain social viewing, causal relations between relevant variables such as viewing motivation, communication behaviors, satisfaction, and adherence intention have been relatively neglected. Thus, this study aimed to reveal the moderating effects of communication behaviors on relations between social viewing motivation, social viewing satisfaction, and adherence intention. Also, this study divided the social viewing motivation into pursuit of pleasure, pursuit of information, sharing viewing experience, and expressive motivation, the communication behaviors into production activity, spread activity, and acceptance activity, and the social viewing satisfaction into program satisfaction and communication behavior satisfaction. Targeting social viewing users in their 20s-40s, this study conducted a survey by recruiting samples based on convenience sampling through Macromill Embrain Research Company. For about seven days from May 13th to May 20th 2016, total 334 questionnaires were collected. Understanding the general characteristics of the targets and the characteristics of main variables through frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, and correlation analysis, to understand the current status and characteristics of social viewing, t-test and one-way ANOVA were performed. Lastly, the multiple-regression analysis was conducted to examine causal relations between social viewing motivation, social viewing satisfaction, and adherence intention, and also to examine moderating effects of communication behaviors. The results of the analysis based on research questions can be summarized like below. was to examine the current status of social viewing motivation, communication behaviors, social viewing satisfaction, and adherence intention. In the results of the analysis, social viewers did their social viewing in the order of pursuit of information, sharing viewing experience, pursuit of pleasure, and expressive motivation. Next, among communication behaviors, production activity was average 1.99(SD=3.31), which showed huge differences between respondents. In case of spread activity and acceptance activity, the average value of acceptance activity was higher than spread activity, which means that social viewers did acceptance activity more actively than spread activity, regarding communication behaviors. Among social viewing satisfaction(program satisfaction, communication behavior satisfaction), program satisfaction was higher. The average of social viewing adherence intention was 4.47 out of 7-point scale, which was the average level. was to examine the current status and characteristics of social viewing. In the results of the analysis, in the degree of social viewing in accordance with the sociodemographic characteristics, the average degree of social viewing in 20s was 4.91, which was significantly higher than viewers in their 30s (4.47), and viewers in their 40s(4.37). During social viewing, SNS the most used by social viewers was Kakao Talk, and followed by Facebook. Also, during social viewing, the program genre the most viewed by viewers was the show/entertainment(27.0%), and followed by drama and news report in the order. was to examine the influence of social viewing motivation on social viewing satisfaction. In the results of the analysis, among control variables, only the degree of social viewing had significant influence while every social viewing motivation had significant influence on program satisfaction. However, Regarding the communication behavior satisfaction, none of the control variables had significant influence while social viewing motivation of pursuit of information had no significant influence on communication behavior satisfaction. aimed to verify the influence of social viewing motivation on social viewing adherence intention. In the results of the verification, among control variables, only the degree of social viewing had significant influence while every social viewing motivation showed significant influence on program satisfaction. was to examine the influence of communication behaviors on social viewing satisfaction. In the results of the analysis, first, on relations between communication behaviors and program satisfaction, among control variables, sex and the degree of social viewing had significant influence. In other words, in case of men with the high degree of social viewing, program satisfaction was high. In the relation with communication behavior satisfaction, among control variables, only sex had significant influence, so that men showed high communication behavior satisfaction. Meanwhile, contrary to spread activity and acceptance activity, production activity had no significant influence on social viewing satisfaction(program satisfaction, communication behavior satisfaction). aimed to verify the influence of communication behaviors on social viewing adherence intention. In the results of the verification, among control variables, only the degree of social viewing had significant influence. Just like the satisfaction, among communication behaviors, only spread activity and acceptance activity showed statistically significant influence on social viewing adherence intention. Lastly, was to verify the moderating effects of communication behaviors on relations between social viewing motivation, social viewing satisfaction, and adherence intention. In the results of the verification, first, production activity had moderating effects on relations between pursuit of pleasure and program satisfaction among social viewing motivations. Also, there were the moderating effects of production activity on relations between communication behavior satisfaction and pursuit of pleasure, pursuit of information, and sharing viewing experience among social viewing motivations. There were no moderating effects of production activity on relations between social viewing motivation and social viewing adherence intention. The spread activity showed the moderating effects on relations between program satisfaction and pursuit of information, and sharing viewing experience among social viewing motivation. On the other hand, there were no moderating effects of spread activity on relations between social viewing motivation, communication behavior satisfaction, and social viewing adherence intention. The acceptance activity showed the moderating effects on relations between program satisfaction and sharing viewing experience among social viewing motivation. Also, there were the moderating effects of acceptance activity on relations between communication behavior satisfaction, and pursuit of pleasure, and expressive motivation among social viewing motivation. There were no moderating effects of acceptance activity on relations between social viewing motivation and social viewing adherence intention. By comprehensively examining relations between social viewing motivation, communication behaviors, social viewing satisfaction, and social viewing adherence intention, this study aimed to draw theoretical discussions related to social viewing. By suggesting communication behaviors as a moderating variable, it provided more abundant theoretical discussions of social viewing motivation, social viewing satisfaction, and adherence intention. Also, the significance of this study was to divide communication behaviors as a moderating variable into production activity, spread activity, and acceptance activity, to more deeply examine the effectiveness of social viewing motivation, and also to divide social viewing motivation into pursuit of pleasure, pursuit of information, sharing viewing experience, and expressive motivation. The results of this study are expected to provide strategies to develop TV programs and contents using social viewing to broadcasters and producers.
