Abstract

이 논문은 영국의 팝 아트 작가인 알렌 존스의 작품에 나타난 섹슈얼리티 연구로, 서구의 섹슈얼리티에 대한 관념에 큰 변화가 일어났던 전후 소비사회의 영향 하에서 존스가 표현해온 인간의 섹슈얼리티의 의미와 그 체계를 밝히고자 하였다. 전후 서구 사회는 전쟁과 성 과학, 기술과 자본주의의 발달 등으로 인하여, 전통적인 성 역할과 결혼을 토대로 한 재생산을 중요시하는 섹슈얼리티의 체계에 변화가 일어났던 시기였다. 섹슈얼리티는 자유와 해방의 대상으로서 추구되었고, 이를 위하여 구체적이고 실천적인 저항 운동이 일어났다. 패션이나 음악, 페스티벌 등을 통한 쾌락주의적인 행위들 또한 이러한 흐름의 하나로서 간주되었다. 이러한 새로운 섹슈얼리티에의 추구는 기성세대 혹은 서구 사회의 지배적 질서에 대한 저항의 방편이 되기도 하였다. 기성의 섹슈얼리티의 체계를 넘어서려는 시도는 무의식이나 양성의 조화의 원리를 강조하는 사상들을 추구하는 경향, 즉 뉴 에이지의 추구를 통해서도 나타났다. 뿐만 아니라 소비 자본주의의 구조가 경제뿐만 아니라 사회 전반에 영향을 미치는 상황 속에서 인간의 신체와 성적 욕망은 대중문화나 대중 매체에 의해서 상품화되고 이미지화, 기호화됨으로써 소비를 촉진시키는 요소로서의 의미를 지니게 되었다. 존스는 순수한 조형적 리얼리티를 중요시한 추상미술에 대항하여 일상생활의 리얼리티에 주목하였고, 전후 소비사회의 시각환경을 이루는 광고나 잡지와 같은 대중 매체 이미지와 대중문화적 요소들을 직접적으로 작품에 반영하였다. 이러한 과정에서 속에서 전후 서구 사회의 섹슈얼리티의 의미를 중점적으로 표현하게 되었다. 그는 신체를 사물화 혹은 상품화하여 표현한 작품들이나, 이러한 신체를 바라보는 관음증적 시선을 다룬 작품들을 통해 표출된 소비사회의 경제·문화적 구조를 드러냈다. 또한 존스의 작품에는 기성의 성적 위계의 불합리함을 우회적으로 공격하는 측면이 포착된다. 그가 표현한 사디즘이나 마조히즘, 의상도착증과 같은 소수의 성적 취향이나 쾌락적인 파티와 관련된 장면들은 인간의 섹슈얼리티를 남과 여, 도덕과 비도덕, 정상과 비정상 등으로 나누는 이분법적이고 억압적인 서구의 섹슈얼리티의 체계의 불합리함을 공격하는 것으로 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 존스는 니체나 융의 사상 혹은 헤르마프로디테 모티브 등을 작품에 반영함으로써, 섹슈얼리티의 근원적 의미를 표현한다. 이는 남녀의 성적 결합이나 자웅동체를 연상시키는 형상으로 표현되는데, 이는 인간의 섹슈얼리티가 본질적으로 여성성과 남성성을 모두 포함하는 것으로서, 이분법적으로 섹슈얼리티를 구분하는 현실의 규범을 초월하는 것임을 나타내기 때문이다. 또한 존스는 여성성과 남성성이 조화를 이루는 것에 대한 표현을 완전성과 새로움의 탄생을 상징하는 것으로 보고, 이를 예술의 창조라는 의미로서 접근하기도 한다. 이처럼 존스의 섹슈얼리티와 관련된 표현은 사회의 지배적 구조를 표출하고, 기성의 성적 위계의 불합리함에 도전하며, 서구의 이분법적인 섹슈얼리티의 체계를 초월하는 것에 대한 것으로, 기본적으로 기성의 지배적 질서를 폭로하고 이에 저항하는 흐름의 연장선상에 있다. 그러나 존스의 이러한 표현들은 궁극적으로 저항에 머무르지 않고, 인간의 섹슈얼리티의 본질적 의미에 다각도로 접근하고 있다는 점에서 특별한 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있으며, 이는 여타의 팝 아트 작가들과의 차이점이기도 하다.;This study is about the sexuality expressed in the works of Allen Jones and it tried to find out the meaning and system of sexuality that Jones has expressed under the influence of post-war consumer society where there was a big change in the concept of sexuality in the western society. The post-war era in the western society was a time when there was a change in the system of sexuality that used to repressed on traditional gender roles and reproduction based on marriage due to the war, sexology, the development of technology and capitalism. Sexuality was pursued as an object of freedom and liberation, and there were specific and practical resistance movements for this. Hedonistic behaviors through fashion, music, and festivals were thought to be one of such trends. Such pursuit of new sexuality worked as a way of resistance against the dominant order of the older generation and the western society. The attempts to overcome the existing system of sexuality was also shown in the pursuit of ideologies that emphasize subconsciousness and the principle of harmony of two genders, that is New Age. Moreover, in the circumstances where the structure of consumer capitalism affects not only economy but the overall aspects of society, human body and sexual desire are treated as products, images, and symbols, gaining the significance as factors that promote consumption. Against abstract art that valued pure plastic reality, Jones focused on the reality of daily life which was full of the images in mass media such as advertisements and magazines and elements of pop cultures which constitute the visual environment of post-war consumer society, and directly used in his works. In this process, he mainly expressed the meaning of sexuality in the western society of the post-war era. He expressed the economic and cultural structure of consumer society through the works that objectified human body or through the works that depicted the situation with voyeuristic gaze. Also, Jones' works have the aspect of indirectly attacking the irrationality of existing sexual hierarchy. The scenes related to the sexual deviation such as sadism, masochism, transvestitism and hedonistic parties that he expressed can be seen as an attack against the irrationality of the dichotomous and repressive system of western sexuality that divides sexuality into male and female, morality and immorality, normality and abnormality. In addition, Jones reflected the philosophy of Nietzsche and Jung and the motif of Hermaphroditus in his work, expressing the fundamental meaning of sexuality. These are expressed with the forms that remind of sexual amalgamation of a man and a woman or that remind of hermaphrodite because human sexuality essentially includes both femininity and masculinity and surpasses the realistic regulations that divide sexuality dichotomously. Also, Jones viewed that the expression about the harmony of femininity and masculinity symbolizes the birth of completeness and newness and made an approach to this in the sens of artistic creation. As can be seen above, Jones' expression related to sexuality represents the prevailing social structure, challenges the irrationality of existing hierarchy, and surpasses the dichotomous system of sexuality of the western society. It is in line of revealing the existing dominant order and resisting it. However, such expressions of Jones are not just resistance but have the significance in that they make multilateral approaches to the essential meaning of sexuality, which are the difference from other pop artists.
