This study was conducted to investigate how attitudes toward advertising messages could vary depending on the messages’ characteristics and the consumers’ individual abilities. A plethora of advertising messages are framed in various ways, presenting very different types of information. Many previous studies have examined how consumers’ attitudes toward messages change depending on the framing of the messages or the types of information. However, it is also important to take the consumers’ numeracy skills into consideration when developing advertising messages because they can have a significant influence on information processing. The influence of consumer numeracy and its interaction with other factors involved in information processing have been investigated in diverse areas including medical decision making and risk perception. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of studies on numeracy in consumer domains, where the use of numerical information is actually quite prevalent. Therefore, this study is an attempt to determine the various kinds of messages that consumers with different levels of numeracy would evaluate favorably. A framework based on previous studies suggests that the effect of message quantification varies depending on the frames within which the messages are presented. This framework was tested by manipulating message frames (positive vs. negative) and types of information (quantitative vs. qualitative), and by taking numeracy into consideration. Sunscreen cream was advertised in the all of the messages used in the experiment. Overall, it was shown that messages with numerical information were evaluated more positively than those with qualitative information. Also, participants viewed the positively-framed messages more favorably than the negatively-framed ones. It is important to note that the effects of message framing and information type varied depending upon the participant’s level of numeracy. Highly numerate individuals were far less susceptible to the effects of message framing in comparison to less numerate individuals. Furthermore, they were more sensitive to changes in types of information, whereas those with lower numeracy skills were not. These findings have significant implications for consumer studies because they reveal what is important to consider when developing advertising messages. Also, this study expands upon the extant research by specifically examining the influence of numeracy as well as the individual characteristics of advertising messages in order to provide a more comprehensive insight into this topic. Even though the numeracy level of consumers has not received much attention thus far in the literature, this study has confirmed that the audience’s level of numeracy is one of most important factors to consider when developing advertising messages.;본 연구는 다양한 광고 메시지의 특성과 소비자의 개인적인 특성에 따라서 메시지 에 대한 태도가 어떻게 달라지는지 알아보기 위해 진행되었다.
