dc.description.abstract1. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this portfolio is to develop reading and writing skills for a group of “returnee” students at a private academy. Returnee students are individuals who have spent an extended period of time in an English-speaking country and have now returned to Korea. Therefore, these students’ English language proficiency is much higher than their counterparts. The target learners are fifth and sixth graders. They can express ideas with confidence and have very little trouble communicating in English. Thus, rather than focusing on developing language skills, this textbook aims to promote critical thinking skills by using authentic materials; at the same time, the textbook is also designed to help the students to improve all four language skills, especially reading and writing. The textbook will be designed with learners’ particular needs in mind, engaging them in reading books. Nowadays, English test tends to assess the ability to listen and read more and then speak and write properly. As a result, students may need to develop this required ability through meaningful and authentic texts.-
