Tajik Labor Migration to Russia. Its impact on Migrants' Wives who Stay behind

Abstract

This thesis used both secondary and primary data to assess the effects of Tajik labor migration to Russia on migrants’ wives who stay behind in Tajikistan. It discusses how labor migration impacts the lives of women focusing on three main aspects: gender role, personnel relations with spouses, and health status. The results of the study show that labor migration has a number of social consequences for the wives of labor migrants in Tajikistan. Examining the relationship between labor migration and gender role, the results of the study (unlike the previous researches) reveal that Tajik women do not experience higher level of autonomy in the absence of their husbands. In addition, the responsibility of many women increases as a result of their husband’ migration as they start performing new duties. The research concludes that labor migration may also impact the personnel relations of migrants’ wives with their spouses. Although most representatives of the target group had good relations with their spouses, a few found their relations deteriorated as a result of labor migration. Labor migration also appeared to have an impact on psychological and physical health status of migrants’ wives. There is a positive relation between the absence of husbands and a negative emotional state of women. Wives of Tajik labor migrants are also vulnerable to HIV/AIDS due to risky sexual behavior of their husbands, use of drugs and alcohol by them and lack of knowledge. As a result, infected women have to face such challenges as shame, discrimination, pressure and insufficient health care.;본 논문에서는 타지키스탄의 러시아 노동 이주가 타지키스탄에 남은 노동 이주자들의 아내들에게 끼치는 영향에 대해 알아보기 위해 1차 자료와 2차료들을 사용하였다. 본고는 노동 이주가 여성들의 삶에서 성별 역할, 부부관계, 건강상태 총 세 가지 측면에 끼치는 영향에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 연구의 결과에 따르면 노동 이주는 타지키스탄 노동 이주자들의 아내에게 몇 가지 사회적 측면에서 영향을 끼친다. 노동 이주와 성별 역할을 분석한 결과 (기존의 연구와 달리) 타지키스탄 여성들은 남편이 없는 기간 동안 높은 수준의 독립성을 경험하지 않는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이와 더불어, 남편들의 이주의 결과로 새로운 의무를 맞게 되어 많은 여성들의 책임이 증가한다. 본 연구에서는 노동 이주가 이주자와 이주자의 아내 간의 부부관계에 영향을 끼칠 수 있다는 결론이 도출되었다. 연구 대상자들의 대부분은 자신의 배우자와 좋은 관계를 유지하고 있으나 몇 명의 대상자는 노동이주로 인해 부부관계가 악화된다고 하였다. 또한, 노동 이주가 이주자들 아내의 심리적, 신체적 건강 상태에 영향을 미쳤다는 결과가 나타났다. 남편들의 부재와 아내들의 부정적 감정 상태 간에는 긍정적인 상간관계가 나타났다. 타지키스탄 노동 이주자의 아내들은 남편들의 위험한 성적 행동, 마약과 알코올 사용, 부족한 지식으로 인해 HIV/AIDS에 대해 취약하다. 그 결과, 감염된 여성들은 망신, 차별, 압박과 더불어 불충분한 건강 관리와 같은 곤란에 직면한다.
