낯선 시선으로 바라보기

Abstract

인간에게는 호기심이 있다. 나 혹은 남, 이것, 저것에서 무엇인가를 발견하고자 눈을 두리번댄다. 이러한 인간의 호기심으로 말미암아 미지의 영역은 점차 줄어들었으며, 우리의 삶은 더욱 풍족해졌다. 허나 오랜 기간에 걸친 질문에도 불구하고 인간 존재에 대한 호기심은 쉽사리 풀리지 않는 영역이다. 나는 누구인가, 나라고 불리는 것은 과연 무엇인가? 답을 찾기 어려우면서도 가장 흥미로운 질문이다. 그 답을 찾기 위해 누군가는 철학을 하고 누군가는 명상을 하는가 하면, 누군가는 작업을 통해 ‘나’라는 존재에 대한 질문에 답을 하기도 한다. 본 연구자는 일상을 새롭고 낯선 시선으로 바라보며 그 속에 실존하는 인간 존재의 다양한 모습들을 찾고자 하였다. 인간 존재를 바라보는 다양한 시선 중 실존주의 철학가 마르틴 하이데거와, 장 폴 사르트르의 존재론에 기반 하여 살펴보았다. 또한, 알베르 카뮈의 저서 <시지프 신화>에서 그가 제시한 인간이 갖는 ‘부조리’한 감정들에 대해 살펴보았다. 그들은 인간 존재를 현실 세계에서 관찰되어야 한다고 주장한다. 선택의 기로 앞에서 불안한 존재이지만 받아들이며 사는 것이 인간 존재이며, 주체적이고 실존적인 삶을 살기 위해서는 일상을 낯설게 바라보는 시선이 필요함을 설명하였다. 본인은 실존주의 철학에서 주목한 일상을 낯선 시선으로 바라보고자 하는 태도가 실존하는 인간 존재의 다양한 모습들을 발견하는 데 있어서 중요한 출발점이라고 생각하였다. 따라서 이러한 시선이 발현되었던 순간을 추적해보고, 그로 인한 문화적 영향을 살펴보았다. 한국의 전통문화 속에서도 새로운 시선으로 바라보기를 했던 시대로서 조선의 실학사상을 주목하였다. 실학은 현실을 직시하며 그 속에서 참됨을 찾고자 하는 자세로, 이는 진경시대를 여는 바탕이 되었다. 그러한 사상은 미술 문화에 매우 큰 변화를 일으켰는데 즉, 중국의 화풍을 답습하는 것에서 벗어나 우리 눈앞에 펼쳐지는 일상을 화폭에 담는 조선의 독자적 예술 활동을 이끌어냈다. 이러한 변화들을 살펴봄으로써 일상을 낯선 시선으로 바라보고자 하는 시도는 사소한 순간들 속 숨어있는 존재의 가치를 드러나게 하며, 대상의 참모습을 얻게 하는 중요한 기점이 될 수 있음을 알게 되었다. 이처럼 대상을 낯선 시선으로 바라보고자 하는 시도는 시대와 문화적 차이를 두지 않고 나타나는데, 그 이유는 인간의 호기심과 주체적 삶을 향한 본능적 욕구로 설명할 수 있다. 인간 존재는 늘 자신의 존재 가치를 드러냄으로써 실존하고 있음을 증명하려 들기 때문이다. 작가들은 글을 통해, 예술가들은 작품을 통해 인간 존재란 무엇인지 일상에서 보고 듣는 다양한 이미지들을 시각적으로 구현함으로 존재의 실존을 드러내고자 한 것이다. 본인의 주된 작업 역시 일상과 주위의 존재들에 대하여 습관적인 시선에서 벗어나 낯선 시선으로 바라보고 관찰하는 태도에서 비롯되었다. 잠자는 사람을 보면서, 거울을 바라보면서, 문 앞에 서서, 깨어진 유리 조각을 바라보면서, 스쳐 지나가던 순간 속 낯선 시선이 본인의 일상과 회화에서는 어떻게 드러나게 되었는지 살펴보았다. 또한, 익숙한 일상의 공간 역시도 낯선 시선으로 바라보면 새로운 무대장치로 작동될 수 있음을 설명하였다. 표현적 방법 연구에서는 이러한 순간들이 본인 작품에서 어떻게 시각적으로 드러났는지 살펴보았다. 본인은 얼굴의 표정을 읽고 해석하는 일은 친숙하고 습관적인 의미의 세계로 되돌아가는 것이며 이는 존재 자체를 바라보는 시선을 방해하는 것이라 여겼다. 따라서 본인의 작품에서 인물 얼굴의 표정을 없애고, 모든 의미를 배제한 실존하는 모습 그 자체를 바라볼 수 있도록 하였다. 또한, 수묵의 성질은 본인의 주제를 드러내기에 적합하였다. 먹과 물이 종이 위에서 스며들어 가고 번지는 유연성과 자율적 움직임은 대상의 온전한 형태를 와해시킴으로 낯선 이미지로 전달된다. 본인의 작품은 ‘습관들로 여기던 일상의 것들을 새롭고 낯선 눈으로 바라볼 수 있는 것인가? 그렇다면 그 눈으로 바라본 인간 존재는 과연 어떤 모습일까?’의 답을 찾는 과정이다. 본 연구를 통해 익숙한 일상 가운데서 인간 존재나 사물을 바라보는 새로운 시선을 발견하고 실존하는 다양한 존재들의 모습과 그 가치를 찾아볼 수 있었으며, 이는 본인 작품 세계를 이해하는 데 큰 도움이 되었다.;Humans are curious creatures. We consistently look around ourselves, searching for something new. This curiosity is the main drive that encourages us to seek out the unknown, making our lives more affluent. The questions on human or self-existence however, remains uncharted waters, and questioning one’s very own existence is surely one of the most difficult, yet intriguing queries. In attempts to find the answer, some people study philosophy, some meditate, and some answers the question on their ‘self-beings’ through their artworks. This study examines different looks of human existence by giving a fresh and unfamiliar perspective on our daily lives. The research is based on the ontologies of Existentialism thinkers, Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre among others. The project also explores the ‘irrationality’ of human beings which novelist Albert Camus presents on his work of <The Myth of Sisyphus>. They all claimed that one should find human existence from the real world where beings truly reside, rather than from the realm of ideas. They also argued that human beings tend to comply with the uncertainty, and stressed the importance of having an eye for unfamiliar views on everyday life, in order to live independent and existential lives. This defamiliarization are well suggested in literatures and artworks throughout human history. Numerous authors wrote to argue the significance of even the slightest of moment, while artists visually presented the presence of existence. This study too is an outcome of careful observation on surroundings with unfamiliar views, stray from habitual eyes – by examinations on sleeping person, mirror gazing, standing in front of the door, or staring at the broken glasses. This thesis also explains how defamiliarization provides a new mise-en-scène to even the most daily spaces. The expressive research studies how such moments were applied and portrayed on the artworks. The thesis further argues that reading and interpreting one’s facial expression obstructs pure observation on presence itself, a regression to familiar and habitual standpoint. Therefore, the artworks deliberately excluded face expressions, making it unfamiliar so that the audiences can only focus on the figure’s existence itself. The texture of ink was adequate when expressing the thesis. Permeation of ink and water on paper allows great flexibility and autonomous movement, dismantling intact objects whilst conveying unfamiliar images. These artworks are the processes of finding the answers for the questions on whether one can have objectivity on even the most customary affairs, and if so, what the human beings portrayed with such view would look like. This research helped to look at even the most mundane people and objects from a whole new perspective, which allowed to have a better understanding on one’s own world of art.
