We live in the knowledge and information society today. Knowledge develops rapidly and information overflows every second. Ability to acquire necessary information and interpret the acquired information is critical to live in this society. In addition, one needs communication ability to exchange information (Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, 2007; Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, 2011). Generally, people think of communication skills as ability to read, write, speak, and listen but its actual definition is wide and diverse. Such communication skills are important not only in daily lives but also in mathematics. Especially, the writing skills are very critical for solving problems in mathematical education. Therefore, this study suggests RUBRIC writing as a means of aiding students in their problem solving process. Also, the following research questions were selected to identify the effect of RUBRIC writing in student’s problem solving process. 1. How does RUBRIC writing framework affect student’s problem solving? 1-1. Is there any difference in problem solving processes of students who use RUBRIC writing framework and students who do not use it? 1-2. Is there any correlation between problem solving stages of students who participated in the RUBRIC writing? 2. How did students using RUBRIC writing feel about it? The author conducted mixed study to obtain results for the research questions. Prior to the start of this study, a pilot study was conducted once. The subjects of this study were 40 high school 1st year students where 20 students were assigned to intervention group which used RUBRIC writing and 20 students were assigned to control group. The subjects showed voluntary willingness to participate in this study and the study was conducted with the consent of the subjects and their legal guardians. The RUBRIC writing framework used in this study was developed based on problem solving process of Mason, Stacey & Burton (2012) and RUBRIC writing framework of Hye Young Kim (2015). The questionnaire is composed of 15 questions and the questions were based on problems in the high school MathematicsII textbook with reference to Descriptive Assessment Workbook (Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, 2011) and Core Achievement Standards for Mathematics in the 2009 Revised Curriculum. The treatment of this study consisted of 12 sessions and each session was 50 minutes. The students in the intervention group solved problems in the worksheets applied with RUBRIC writing framework and the students in the control group solved problems in worksheets without RUBRIC writing framework. Also, a portion of students in intervention group were randomly selected for individual interview and all interview processes were recorded. The collected data were coded and three in-service teachers including the researcher participated in coding process. SPSS was used to test the validity and reliability of the results of analysis. The results of the study are as follow. First, there was difference in problem solving processes of students who used RUBRIC writing framework and who did not use it. The students who used RUBRIC writing framework solved problems in a way that they go through all phases including attack phase where students get serious about solving problem, enter phase and review phase. The students who went through enter phase and review phase demonstrated higher improvement of problem solving process compared to other students who did not went through these phases. Second, The phases of the problem solving process were found to be correlated when students used RUBRIC writing to solve problems. Especially, the researcher found out that students who went through review phase after solving problems based on RUBRIC framework demonstrated easiness in solving similar type of questions in the future. The results showed that the enter phase aid students in problem solving as it allows students to personally write the idea and conditions of the study rather than just thinking about them. Third, student’s response to the RUBRIC writing became more positive as the sessions took place. Students without experience of using RUBRIC writing expressed complaints about solving math problems using RUBRIC in the early phase of the study. However, students started to get used to solve problems as they go through each stage of the RUBRIC writing and realized the importance of RUBRIC writing by themselves. Putting the above results of this study together, the researcher found that RUBRIC writing framework helps student’s problem solving. Students who used RUBRIC writing framework demonstrated higher improvement of problem solving process compared to students who did not use it. Mason, Stacey & Burton (2012) claimed that enter phase exists for every problem and how people do in the enter phase determines feasibility of effective attack. Such things taken together, RUBRIC writing can aid student’s problem solving process and serve as an alternative to reduce the difficulties that students face in mathematical writing. The researcher suggests that RUBRIC writing can serve as a means of instruction to help student’s self-directed learning and reduce student’s burden in descriptive assessments. Therefore, further studies must be conducted on the long term effect of RUBRIC writing. Also, future studies must to be conducted on effects of RUBRIC writing for students with different academic performance as the results of this study showed tendency that effect of RUBRIC writing was not same for all students.;오늘날 우리는 지식 정보화 사회에 살고 있다.
